First In The World: Baby Born Via Womb Transplant From A Deceased Donor In Brazil

 In what can be accorded to be nothing short of a miracle, for the first time in the world, a baby was born successfully to a mother after receiving a transplanted womb from a dead woman in Brazil reported,  Hindustan Times. The new mother was the recipient in this first of a kind womb transplant. 


The Procedure of transplantation

The details of the case are published in the Lancet Medical Journal. The 32-year-old woman was suffering from Uterine congenital absence and underwent uterine transplantation in Hospital. She received the transplantation from a 45-year-old donor who had experienced vaginal deliveries three times.  As per Daily Mail, the new mother spent two days under observation and was given immunosuppression drugs to stop her body from rejuvenating new organs.

Seven months later, the woman became pregnant with the transplanted womb. Her eggs had been frozen, and she was pregnant after the embryo was fertilized through IVF. The baby was born through cesarean section after 35 weeks and measured 45 cm in length which is the average weight of the newborn baby.

Moreover, the doctors removed transplanted uterus after the baby was removed. The use of deceased donors could significantly broaden access to this treatment,’ said Dr. Dani Ejzenberg, author of the study. She also added that it is the first time in the milestone of uterus transplant which would create possible childbirths for many infertile women. But the need for a live donor is a limitation because the donors are rare possibly willing. 

Reportedly, this is the first successful womb transplant to produce a live birth after ten unsuccessful cases in countries like the United States, the Czech Republic, and Turkey. Although the first baby was born after a live donor womb transplant in Sweden 2013, till now, a scientist so far has reported total 39 cases and 11 live births.
