Fresh in the wake of terrorist infiltration at Pathankot, the Home Ministry has taken charge and has decided to set up laser walls at the unfenced stretches of the Indo-Pak border in Punjab. The Indo-Pak border runs along 2900 KM. There are over 40 riverine stretches, each of which makes a vulnerable site for breach of security. The laser wall technology was developed by the Border Security Force to overcome the same and to entirely eliminate any threat of  infiltration via the route of border-crossing rivers.

The laser beams will be set up such that a wall is created over the surface of the river water. The laser wall will detect movement of objects across the line of sight between the laser source and the detector. In case of any breach of the wall, a loud siren will be sounded which, in turn, will alert the security forces.

As of now, only 5 or 6 such sites have been secured with laser walls.

The terrorists who were part of the guerrilla attack at the Pathankot air base are suspected to have crossed the border via the Ujj river in Bimiyal, one of the remaining  40 unprotected sites. Although equipped with a camera with a 130 metre field of view, the measures were inadequate to warn or prevent potential infiltration.

The concept of laser wall’s is not new to Indian Security infrastructure, Laser walls were first set up in Jammu last year, which, at the time, was prone to terrorist infiltration. Pathankot and Punjab being at the front line of recent terror attacks, the security infrastructure along the border has gathered pace. In addition to setting up laser walls, additional personnel have been assigned to border security in Punjab, with an increase in nighttime boat patrolling.

The Logical Indian community is  hopeful that the recent additions to enhance security will firewall infiltration of terrorists into the country. We also would like to take this opportunity to thank our security forces in keeping our country safe and secure amidst troubled borders.
