Bibi Prakash Kaur of Jalandhar could be a ray of hope for Punjab to improve their low sex ratio. Bibi looks after unwanted, unclaimed and orphaned children through her “Unique home”. The home takes in the abandoned and unwanted daughters of families in the area. Currently, there are just over 60 girls who call this home. Bibi herself being an orphaned child knows the pain and sufferings the orphaned kids go through. She was abandoned 60 years ago and was  taken in by Nari Niketan, a different shelter for women and children in the area. From there, she was taken in by the local Gurdwara (Sikh Temple). In 1993, she started the Unique home and began rescuing abandoned and unwanted girls in Jalandhar. She watches over the girls and provides food, clothing, education, love and support. She calls every single girl daughter, and they call her their mother.

Most of her inmates at “Unique Home” are girls. With  893 females for every 1000 males according to 2011 census is one of the lowest sex ratios in India, however, there is the ray of hope with Bibi Prakash Kaur.

Punjab despite having favorable statistics wrt immunisation of Children, registration of Children at birth, it has fared poorly on female infanticide. Punjab along with Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of cases of female infanticide’s in India. On the positive side, Punjab has shown marked improvements in its numbers from the previous census perhaps due to people like Bibi Prakash Kaur.

At “Unique Home” social skills and educational qualifications are imparted to the inmates to empower the children to face life on their own terms when they have grown up. The girls could not have found a better person than Prakash Kaur for the job of providing them with support and succor.  Under Prakash Kaur’s care and tutelage, these girls are all well-adjusted individuals willing and able to take their rightful place in a society that still seems to harbour a strong aversion to children of their gender. Prakash Kaur is acutely aware of the challenges that lie before her, but she has faith.

The Logical Indian commends Bibi Prakash Kaur on her inspiring work. Punjab and India certainly need more Bibi Kaur’s to rectify the injustice we as a society have done to the girl child. We request the Punjab government and other citizens to support Bibi Kaur by any means possible.
