Many of us are not aware of the terms we use in our life. Nationalism and patriotism are two words which are often used inter-changeably. Sometimes we see patriotism disguised as nationalism or nationalism disguised as patriotism and we are not able to identify. This is incorrect since there is a world of difference between the two words, in spite of a few shared ideals.

For the community members, we at The Logical Indian try to simplify.

Please check the difference chart below and  check if you are a nationalist or a patriot.

Differences Between Nationalism & Patriotism

Nationalism Patriotism
1. Nationalism is a feeling that one’s country is superior to another in all respects with a sentiment of superiority and aggression toward other countries.

1. Patriotism pertains to the love for a nation, with more emphasis on values and beliefs. The sentiments are more inclined towards the idea of coexistence, with equal respect & regard for other countries. In patriotism, people all over the world are considered equal.

2. Nationalism involves “national identity”. 2. Patriotism involves personal opinions and social conditioning.
3. A nationalist cannot tolerate any criticism and considers it an insult. 3. A patriotic person tends to tolerate criticism and tries to learn something new from it.
4. Nationalism makes one try to find justification for mistakes made in the past. 4. Patriotism enables people to understand both the shortcomings and improvements made.
5. Most nationalists do not believe in friendly relations with other countries. 5. Patriots tend to believe in friendly relations with other countries.
6. Nationalism can be a little aggressive. 6. Patriotism is passive by nature.
7. Example: The activists who call for the US to become a “Christian nation” because they want their nation to be identified by one religion are nationalists… 7. …while those who agree with the US First Amendment which separates church and State are happy with a secular nation are patriots.
