Sanju, as her father
Eerappa fondly calls her, met with an accident while riding pillion on a motorcycle with her friend near KRS dam near Mysuru on February 21. BGS hospital had declared her as brain dead and hence a quick decision was taken to
donate her organs. It is reported that the family took inspiration from the recent tragedy which struck
Mr. Harish Nanjappa, who decided to
donate organs even while he was dying from a gory accident few days ago on the outskirts of Bangalore. Even as the decision to transplant the heart was taken, a recipient was immediately found out by the Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka (ZCCK) in the form of Mr. Shivan, 30, a native of Ooty whose heart functioning has deteriorated to almost twenty percent. Sanju, gave a new lease of life to four people with the donation of her heart, liver, kidneys and eyes.

The Moment When Everybody’s Eyes Became Moist

Even while an ambulance and a police jeep were ready and the green corridor was created, Dr. Punnen decided to take the heart in his car. The heart was to be transported 37 kilometers for the transplantation to take place. The car was readied and the heart was placed in an ice box and taken to the car. Suddenly one gentleman from the crowd came in front of the ice box and bowed down and stayed for a few moments. It was Sanju’s father who paid his last respects and  had a glimpse of his daughter’s heart for one last time. The heart-wrenching moment when not many could control their tears.

How can anyone donate an organ?

Anyone from a child to an old person can donate an organ. According to the Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka (ZCCK) for Transplantation, even if you have had a serious illness in the past, you can become a donor under the right circumstances.

A person can pledge their organs directly by approaching the ZCCK office at Nimhans or pledge it online by clicking on http://zcck.in/DonorCard1.aspx. If a person decides to register it online, then the ZCCK will send the donor card to the address. You can also pledge organs through NGOs.
