“Garbage is not what it seems, to me it is something special” Says a 17 year Inventor who is making Incredible robots out of trash in Patacamaya, Bolivia.
Esteben Quispe, is already a known face among people, called as “Genius”. He is a self taught inventor, who believes “fantasy is the key to creativity” started working on computers at the age of 10 with his father and brother. His latest invention “Bolivian Wall-E”. a square-shaped robot that is a replica of, and is named after, the Pixar character Wall-E, is catching up lot of attention internationally. “I immediately liked the character because of its intelligence and ecological conscience,” Quispe explains. He makes all of his robots out of electronic waste, which can be controlled by mobile phones.
At this age, Esteben is working tirelessly to keep the planet clean ”as I wish Bolivia was a less polluted country” He said . Quispe first ventured to a trash dump to collect Metals, screws, and rubber to build the robot. He has his own makeshift lab at home, stuffed with design charts, strategies, and gadgets in the whole room. He never wants to grow up and stay as a child, as it allows him to dream, and create.
Esteben’s vision behind creating robots is to bring back the agriculture, to keep the people in his village fed and alive, and to call people migrating to cities. He wants his robots to be environmental friendly, as totally against the use of batteries, Esteben believes Energy should be drawn from the light. He wants protect “La Pachamama” or Mother Earth.The Bolivian Wall-E inventor is confident that his invention will help his community. Quispe also won the best prize in a high school robotics competition.
Bolivia remains the poorest country in South America, with low levels of scientific and technological innovation. In Patacamaya, where many residents live in poverty and don’t have access to secondary education, Quispe’s talent for making electronic devices from e-waste has made him something of a local celebrity.
