Bravery is not about physical strength but a state of mind to remain relentless to one’s right. Well, Mitali Shah from Dehradun just proved this to us with her courageous act of saving her coworkers, the people and money inside the bank from a robber with a gun.
On 20th February, a Saturday that saw very few customers and only 3 women employees in total inside the bank, a person with a helmet steps in the disguise of a customer and enters the UCO bank in Uttrakhand. Seeing the little resistance prevailing, he took out a revolver and points it right in the face of Mitali Sharh, the one who was handling the cash counter.
There was sheer panic around, especially for Mitali facing the gunpoint. She initially exclaimed that she would collect and give off all the cash, and requested him to lower the gun. In a while, she didn’t succumb to the situation but gathered all her confidence to say something that changed everything ahead there. “I am not giving you the cash. Shoot me if you can” said Mitali Shah bravely.
The other two employees gathered courage from her voice and one of them named Majulika pressed the siren. Once the alarm went loud, the robber panicked and ran away from the bank. There was a huge wave of appreciation to Mitali for the way she saved so many lives with her act of bravery. The management was all praises too for her. Mitali and the two other employees will be awarded the Tilu Rauteli Award by the State Government. Tilu Rauteli was one of the heroic women of Uttarakhand.
Mitali says, “I don’t know from where the courage came but there was only one thing in my mind – either I would lose my life or everybody will be saved”.
On being asked what inspired her, she replied “Neerja”. Now that’s truly inspiring!
