My Story: A Great Lesson For All Of Us Who Feel Life Is A Walk In The Park

I have often thought of having a word with Mr. Vivekanandan, a 59 year old unmarried, daily wage worker. One day I was lucky to have found him resting, on a bag of rice which was loaded on his back, because he was tired of climbing the steps of the hotel. He delivers 8 to 10 sacks there daily, each sac weighs around 75 kilos, and he also delivers 6 to 7 tins of oil weighing 16kgs each to another hotel in the north part of Thrissur. For these services he gets paid of Rs.31/- a
nd Rs.10.25, for every sac and every tin of oil respectively. Along with this he gets a free meal when he delivers at the hotel.

People like Vivekanandan are commonly seen in the Thrissur’s Swaraj Round, self employed professionals with very honest care for his job providing maximum satisfaction for their customers, without any kind of regrets for almost twenty five years. For his efforts all he had gained is a backbone in the form of bow, because his head and shoulder have to constantly bend towards the ground to balance the heavy load which he carries.

He is the native of a residential area in Thrissur called Nadupuzha, next to the railway cross (Nadupuzha gate commonly known), he starts his job from 9.30am. On reaching the town he rents a push-pull cart from a shop, for which he has to pay Rs.8/- per hour, he pushes the cart to the market place called Ariyangadi (Rice bazar) gets all the stuff fully loaded for his customers. He then pushes the cart towards Kizhakkekotta (East fort) to deliver the goods to different customers on the list the whole day.

I was surprised to see him smiling, there was no hint of tiredness on his face. I asked him “do you feel dissatisfied with your job?”, he replied back innocently with a smile, “I am getting my daily bread by the grace of God, he will take care of me, it is because of God I can carry on with my job without any complaints from my customers for such a long period of time. I thank God for the great blessings he has showered on me”.

We very often miss or neglect such kind of Vivekanandan’s on the streets who are struggling and sweating out their blood for survival. If we can spend a little time and share our feelings with them and understanding their difficulties, it will be of a great lesson for all of us who feel life is a walk in the park.
