Petrol pump employees in three bunks falling under the jurisdiction of Kannapuram police station in Kannur district of Kerala, refuse to give petrol to all two-wheeler riders who come in without wearing a helmet. This is a part of the Navjeevan project that has been implemented in Kannur.
This initiative has been kick-started by Kannapuram police station’s Sub Inspector Binu Mohan, who after seeing the statistics of death due to absence of helmets, came up with this idea of something more powerful than just a fine on being caught without helmets.
In 2013, 34 per cent of riders death in India happened due to lack of helmets. Again 40 per cent if road deaths and 70 per cent of injuries in road accidents can be reduced if the rule of wearing helmets is implemented strictly in every country. The area under Kannapuram police station also witnessed two deaths in road accident in the last four months due to absence of helmets.
Sub Inspector Binu says that he was inspired to introduce this rule seeing the same happening in other parts of the country. The petrol stations are also cooperating with the police to bring a positive change among the two-wheeler riders. The police is soon planning to expand this rule to the entire district.
The Logical Indian supports the initiative taken by Sub Inspector Binu to stop giving petrol to two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets. Helmets are meant for safety of one’s own. In spite of issuing many laws, people still refrain from wearing them. Such an initiative will compel people to wear helmets. We urge other states also to implement such mandatory laws. After all, safety is one the most important concerns.
