Transgenders are making their mark and re-writing the pages of history

Supported by

Just last year, India made history by becoming the first country in the world to recognize the third gender.

Today the transgenders have lost no time in re-writing history. From a group that is often shunned or derided, to winning elections, they have raced ahead.

Contesting independently, Madhu Kinnar won the Mayoral election for the Raigarh Municipal corporation in Chhattisgarh by defeating his nearest rival BJP’s Mahaveer Guruji, by 4,537 votes.

I only spent Rs. 60,000-70,000 from my earnings during my campaign. It was the public support that encouraged me to enter the poll fray for the first time and because of their support only, I emerged as the winner.“, Madhu said.

We salute Madhu’s spirit and bold decision to contest the elections. The Indian political scenario is largely dominated by male politicos. Even women participation is feeble. Taking a step to highlight even a smaller community of eunuchs in this partial a domain, is commendable. His win clearly indicates the changing mindset of the masses towards the eunuch community. With Madhu holding a significant political position now, this often looked-down upon community can hope to have their voices heard.
