In Gura village, a 50 year old woman is a widow and stands in the category of “below poverty line” people. She is a mother to three children, and she is the sole earning member in the family. Due to the rainfall, her house broke down. She had received 25 kg’s of wheat on 17th July which would get over within few days.
An old couple aged 60 years lives in Kotda district of Udaipur in Rajasthan. Heavy rainfall in the recent past has made conditions difficult for their sustenance. They couldn’t save the wheat they had bought with their old-age pension from rainfall and the leftover was stolen by someone. They are purely dependent on their pension, to stand in the “above poverty line” category but for the last week they are in extreme penury, due to lack of food-grains.
Such incidents of starvation are present with several tribal families, who are incapable to send their messages or raise voice to the government, the state or district authorities.
As a result to inadequate food-grains, people eat fahad plant which otherwise is eaten by the animals. Fahad is a plant which grows in jungles and isn’t very much in height. Its leaves are similar to peanut leaves and they spring into yellow flowers.Their seeds are like Fenugreek seeds (Methidana). Usually, the villagers sell these seeds to dealers who use this in making of food for animals. But these days, commoners are boiling these leaves and giving them the shape of laddu’s by putting salt into them, to beat their hunger.
These villagers need the help of government and concerned authorities should make a note of their problems. There should be adequate steps implemented in this regard, to help people in these rain affected villages get food-grains, so they don’t have to sleep with empty stomach.
