Yet again, doctors collaborated smoothly with traffic personnel and police to transplant lungs and heart of a brain-dead 19-year-old boy from Kochi to a patient at Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai.

The organs of Pranav (19), hailing from Kayamkulam, who was declared brain dead after a road accident on Monday, were harvested by a team of doctors at Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi. The organs had to be airlifted to Chennai for interstate organ transplant.

Within no time, the heart and lungs were rushed to the Nedumbassery airport, situated 34 kilometers away from the hospital. Credit goes to the police for creating a green corridor (all signals remained green) to transport the organs from the hospital to the airport. To make it more hassle free, control room vehicles were posted at all major traffic points on the NH 47. There were 15 major traffic points on the stretch.

Making a swift move, a Deccan Charters special flight took off from Nedumbassery airport by 12:30pm. It landed at the Chennai airport at 2:00 pm.

To give the task an edge, a similar green corridor was created in Chennai. The organs had to be transported from Chennai airport to Fortis Malar Hospital at Adyar, situated 12 km away. An ambulance carrying the organs covered this distance in merely 10 minutes. The transplantation procedure started immediately. The doctors had said that it would take more than three hours after receiving the organs to complete the process. The patient is a 24-year old from Maharashtra.

This city has taught us that with mutual coordination and a sense of responsibility, great tasks can be achieved.
