Schools and universities are turning out highly skilled barbarians because we don’t provide a framework of values to young people, who more and more are searching for it. – Steven Muller, John Hopkins University.

From the brainchild of PETA (People for Ethical Treatment Towards Animals) it seems that the direction of winds of education in Goa can change, who for instance in collaboration with State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) are  asking the schools to teach a programme on ‘compassionate citizen’.

For the effectiveness, SCERT Director NC Honnikeri have already in a circular issued to various schools, has asked them to follow a brochure issued by PETA (People for Ethical Treatment Towards Animals), for sensitizing students against cruelty of animals. The circular is issued to all government, government-aided, middle and high schools has asked teachers to show students video clips educating them on the issue which will make our Society more environment friendly and livable.

For instance, ‘Compassionate Citizen’ is PETA India’s version of the internationally recognized PETA US’ humane-education programme, ‘Share the World’, which aims to develop the relationship of children and  foster the attitude of kindness with the fellow animals.  “It can be easily included in school curricula via languages, science, social studies, environmental and values education subjects,” it said. The programme has already been endorsed by the Animal Welfare Board of India and the Central Board of Secondary Education. Other states too came up and are endorsing the programmes which include Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Nowadays, People confuse education with the ability to memorize facts. Educating the mind without morals and mutual understandings create a maniac in society.

With this effort, there is a hope for a true broad based education which will prepares students for life, for wellness of environment, without losing their areas of specialization and competence.

We too can take a pledge and help their efforts reach a positive edge by caring more the animals who remain uncared.

The Logical Indian community applauds the gesture from SCERT and PETA. Our society is in a dire need of education that focuses on heart beside the brain.
