My Story: How Can Someone Be So Good To Someone In Today’s World

Supported by

This summer when I was heading back home with my uncle and aunt, on the way an incident took place. We were travelling by train and it was a sleeper class coach. We know the hawkers come and go in a continuous manner.

A hawker selling books caught my attention and I called him over to look at what he had. I liked a book and bargained with him and somehow managed to get it for 100 bucks. I stood up to get my wallet from my backpack which was in the upper berth. As soon as I opened the chain my mobile flew out of the window and fell somewhere near the tracks.

I was shocked, not knowing what to do I started shouting and was looking for someone to pull the chain. There was no chain in the compartment and the train had caught up speed so there was no chance that I could get my phone back. It was such moment when I felt I lost everything. Although I was with my family members but in today’s world you save most of your the data in your cellphone, and when you lose it, I am sure you can understand the feeling.

I started crying and thinking of every memory I had in my phone. My uncle, aunt and the fellow passengers were trying to console me and making assumptions of how the phone fell.

Honestly I was so annoyed by them but I dint speak a word and kept sobbing. At that moment I heard someone saying “koi baat nai apka phone jahan bhi gira hai mai dhundne ki koshish karunga or mujhe mila to apko de dunga” (never mind, wherever your phone must have dropped, I will try to find it and if I get it, I will give you). It was the book seller. He said he lived in the nearby village and would take a chance of finding the phone. I was so happy and said “please bhaiya apko phone mile to please mujhe de dena” (Please brother, if you get my phone, please give it to me). My uncle and he exchanged numbers and said if he had any information he would let us know.

I reached home and after 2 days that guy called and said that he got my phone, I did not believe and asked me to send a pic of it in. He whatsApped a picture and guess what it was my phone!! My happiness knew no bounds. I said that I would go to his place and get it but it is more than a overnight journey from Assam to Katihar(Bihar). So I told him to wait for 2 days and I would get the phone. But I was shocked when he said that he would come to Assam to give it to me and I did not have to go there. At first I did not believe.

I wondered how could someone be so good to someone in today’s world- it’s a rare thing. I asked him again and he confirmed that they would come to Guwahati (Assam) and give me the phone. We agreed to it and after 2 days he came to Guwahati . He met me, my mother, my uncle, talked to them gave me my phone and was leaving when I called him and gave him 2000 rupees offered him to have breakfast with us. I was so grateful to him. We started asking about how he got the phone and then he said that he had asked the children of the village to find the phone and promised them that if they could find it he would give them gifts and that the money that we gave him was for the children.

That moment it was seriously like “faith in humanity is back” for me. I was so touched with the generosity that person showed and that too when his own financial condition was not good. I had another 1000 bucks with me and offered that to him, but this time he clearly declined and said that he did not want. Moreover, those 2000 bucks were enough for him. He finished his meal and took off saying that he had work to do and so we bid him goodbye and thanked him once more.
