The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a well-know and globally recognized agency of the United Nations (UN). The activity of UNESCO pertains to five spheres – education, social/human sciences, culture, natural sciences and communication.
Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) is an international forum operating under UNESCO, which unifies distinguished researchers from over 70 countries. TWAS awards honour the most venerable individuals in their fields. Professor U. Ramamurty from the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc) Bangalore has won the 2015 TWAS award for engineering.
The award also includes a cash prize of $15,000. He is a leading expert in the field of material engineering. Professor C.N.R. Rao, who is himself a Bharat Ratna recipient and a former president of TWAS, congratulated Professor Ramamurty, while emphasising on the need of increasing research activity in the nation.
An international recognition of deserving scientists is a great prospect. Not only is it an indicator of a nation’s capabilities, but it is also a unique source of motivation for young students.
The Logical Indian congratulates Professor Ramamurty.
