PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates New Afghan Parliament Built By India In Kabul

Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the new Afghan Parliament when he went to Kabul for delegation-level talks. He received a warm welcome by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

Ghani thanked India for its standing beside Afghanistan in hard times.

After the talks Modi inaugurated the Afghan parliament that was built by India at a cost of USD 90 million. He even addressed the two houses.

Both toured the parliament building and arrived at the main session hall in the presence of the guests where members of Afghan parliament were also included.

The Prime Minister was reported, as published in Hindustan Times, to have said, “It will stand as an enduring symbol of the ties of emotions and values, of affection and aspirations that bind us in a special relationship.

He added that he was touched as the new block in the building was named Atal block after the name on India’s former PM, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The construction of building was started by India in the year 2007 as a mark of friendship and cooperation.

Prior to the visit of PM Modi’s visit, India delivered three Mi 25 attack helicopters to Afghanistan.

The Defence sources said that the helicopters delivered to Afghanistan will boost its defence sector to counter terrorists.

PM Modi even had a talk on security issues and discussed the ways to help war-torn country where India has committed over two billion assistance.

The Afghan parliament building will be the most prominent symbol of Indian efforts to help Afghanistan. Its foundation stone was laid by Baba-e-Millat, Zahir Shah, in the presence of the President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in 2005.
