The India Game Developer Conference (IGDC) 2024 kicked off in Hyderabad on November 13, drawing over 6,000 attendees, including industry experts and gaming enthusiasts. The event marks the launch of a regional centre for the Indian Institute of Creative Technology, aimed at enhancing skill development in animation, visual effects, and gaming. Officials expressed a commitment to increasing India’s share in the global gaming market, currently at 2%, with ambitions to double this figure. The conference features more than 100 developers showcasing innovations and discussing industry trends.

Hyderabad Becomes a Creative Tech Hub

The IGDC 2024 is taking place at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) and will span three days, offering a variety of activities such as panel discussions and workshops. Officials highlighted the significance of skill development in the gaming sector, stating that the new institute will be a vital resource for nurturing talent and encouraging innovation within the industry. Plans for rapid implementation of initiatives to support local startups and enterprises were also discussed.

A Growing Gaming Ecosystem

The establishment of the Indian Institute of Creative Technology’s regional centre is part of a broader strategy to strengthen India’s position in the global gaming landscape. With a gaming population exceeding 500 million, India’s gaming industry generates substantial revenue but faces challenges such as regulatory fragmentation and talent shortages. The formation of the Game Developer Association of India (GDAI) during IGDC aims to unify efforts within the industry and promote supportive policies. Officials reiterated that video gaming is seen as a creative content-driven sector, distinct from real-money gaming, highlighting a focus on fostering creativity and innovation.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

As Hyderabad steps into its role as an emerging creative tech hub, it is crucial to recognise the potential of the gaming industry as a driver of economic growth and cultural expression. By investing in skill development and creating an inclusive environment for innovation, India can not only participate in but lead the global gaming narrative. How can we collectively support emerging talents and local developers to create games that reflect our rich storytelling heritage?
