My Story: I Was To Do An Arranged Marriage, But I Fell In Love With This Man

“In Shailaja’s [Shailu, as she is called] words : We know each other since Raheja college. But we were just ‘hi-bye’ friends. Alok had many complexes earlier in his life because both of his parents are deaf and mute. And that’s why he never spoke to girls in college. We were part of the same group, but even then he hardly spoke to me. After college, we met again in 2007 at a college reunion and kept meeting after that. Initially, I was to do an arranged marriage, but… I fell in love. Luckily, my parents agreed and we are happily married for 5 and a half years. The thing is, no one has ever proposed to each other. Never felt the need of that.

I learnt how to understand my in-laws. Today, I can say, I understand them better than other family members.

Alok is very accommodative and supports me in whatever I do. I’ve learnt martial arts and I started running since 2013. I want to continue with running as it acts as stress buster. I run every morning at 6am for 8-10 Kms.

We don’t own a TV, instead we like to spend weekends with in-laws. We live a minimalistic life. We have got this habit of instantly getting rid of unnecessary things in our small house and live to achieve a simple clutter free life. We want to have a cardboard box to throw things which are unused for 3 months at a stretch. Which can be emptied every quarter.”
