“I never been to school but my wife read up to class five. We are always poor. That time I worked in village, I was earning 120 taka daily. I had to give half of my income to my parents. I don’t know how my wife managed buying groceries. One night during dinner she put a small plate beside our plates. I didn’t get it and after her laughter I understood we were pregnant. Because of my low income my parents were not at all happy with the news.
So I realized I have to care alone. I started carrying sacks as extra job. With that money I bought eggs and milk for my wife. She could not stand smell of anything so I started cooking for the family.Everyone said Mala did magic spell on me but I ignored them. Months passed, one day she hold my hand and asked me not to leave the house. I stayed and got to know her water broke. Suddenly with tears she said she wanted me to stand beside her during delivery. I said I will.
Everyone made fuss of this, said no husband ever stand in atur Ghar (where delivery take place). Even they didn’t know any educated man who could do this. Their taunts were louder than my wife’s labour scream. But we didn’t care. I stood still by holding her hand. At one moment no words were entering in my ears, I was crying like a child. My exhausted wife smiled and said her pain is tolerable compare to mine. Then our child arrived ! Before the midwife could handover the baby to mother, my wife said to give our daughter to me. The wet baby was glowing in my hands. A poor father was crying by holding her fairy. This is my story brother, poor man, poor story.”
