At just three years and eight months old, Anish became the youngest FIDE-rated player in history with a rating of 1555 on November 1, 2024, following successful performances in state-level tournaments. Mahindra humorously suggested he should challenge Anish while he still can, highlighting the increasing recognition of young talents in Indian chess. This interaction signifies the support young players receive from influential figures, fostering a vibrant chess community.

Anish Sarkar’s Rise in Chess

Anish Sarkar, born on January 26, 2021, in Kolkata, has made waves in the chess community with his exceptional talent. His competitive debut came in October at the West Bengal State Under-9 Open, where he scored 5.5 points out of 8, defeating two rated players and finishing 24th overall. A week later, he competed in the Under-13 Open, where he faced older and more experienced opponents, ultimately meeting the FIDE requirement for earning his initial rating of 1555. His coach, Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua, noted Anish’s astounding focus and dedication, stating he trains for seven to eight hours daily. Anish’s journey began when he was introduced to chess videos on YouTube by his parents, who had no prior knowledge of the game.

The Impact of Social Media

The viral nature of Anish’s video underscores the power of social media in promoting talent and connecting individuals with influential figures like Anand Mahindra. Mahindra shared his admiration on social media, humorously acknowledging his own chess skills while expressing a desire to play against Anish. This recognition not only boosts Anish’s profile but also encourages other young talents to pursue their passions. The supportive community around chess is growing, as evidenced by recent achievements of young players like R Praggnanandhaa and D Gukesh, who have inspired many across India.
