I’m Usaid Shaikh, a graphic designer, video editor, and animator from the bustling city of Mumbai. My journey has been anything but ordinary. Diagnosed with autism in my early childhood, I faced challenges that many might find overwhelming. Yet, through it all, I discovered the transformative power of art—my voice when words felt out of reach.
Finding My Voice
As a child, social interactions were daunting. I struggled to express myself verbally, often resorting to drawing stick figures to communicate my thoughts and feelings. It was through these simple sketches that I began to connect with the world around me. My love for art blossomed alongside my passion for Disney and Pixar movies. Their vibrant stories inspired me to pursue a career in graphic design and animation, where I could bring my imagination to life.
A Long Road to Recognition
Fast forward to 2020, a pivotal year for me. My short film, “True Happiness,” was screened at the Mumbai International Film Festival. That moment was surreal—a culmination of years of hard work and perseverance. It felt like a dream come true, proving that despite the hurdles I faced, I could carve out a meaningful path for myself.
Building My Skills
I hold a Diploma in Autodesk Maya from MAAC and VFX Prime from Arena Animation. Over the past two years, I’ve immersed myself in freelance work, honing my skills in graphic design, video editing, and illustration. Proficient in tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Autodesk Maya, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with various esteemed organizations—Big Bazaar, Forum for Autism, and NewzHook among them. From designing t-shirts and mugs to creating logos and event flyers, each project has been an opportunity to express my creativity. The pride I feel when I see my designs come to life is indescribable.
The Joy of Independence
Freelancing has not only allowed me to showcase my talents but has also given me a sense of independence. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about earning my own money—paying my bills and treating my family brings me immense joy. Thanks to platforms like Atypical Advantage, I’ve found numerous opportunities that have helped me grow professionally.
Looking Ahead
I am ambitious about my future in the animation industry. My dream is simple yet profound: to secure a great job that allows me to be independent—to buy my own house and car one day. Each step I take brings me closer to that dream.
While I still grapple with conversations in new social situations, art remains my sanctuary—a bridge connecting me to others. It’s a reminder that our struggles can lead us to beautiful places if we embrace our passions.
