Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan honoured Indian hockey player P.R. Sreejesh with a cash award of ₹2 crore following his bronze medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics on August 8. Sreejesh, who announced his retirement on July 22, played a pivotal role in the Indian team’s success, marking a historic achievement with consecutive Olympic medals. The Kerala Olympic Association has also requested that he be granted an IAS rank in recognition of his contributions to sports.

Celebrating a Sports Legend 

In a special ceremony held on October 30, 2024, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presented P.R. Sreejesh with the ₹2 crore award, acknowledging his remarkable career as a goalkeeper for the Indian hockey team. Sreejesh’s performance was instrumental in securing the bronze medal against Spain on August 8, concluding his international career on a high note. “My journey has been nothing short of extraordinary,” Sreejesh remarked, expressing gratitude to his supporters and teammates. His achievements include not only the recent Olympic success but also a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, solidifying his legacy in Indian sports. This honour was decided during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Vijayan on August 21, reflecting the government’s commitment to recognising sporting excellence.

A Legacy of Excellence 

Sreejesh’s retirement marks the end of an era for Indian hockey as he transitions to become the head coach of the junior men’s team, ensuring that his expertise continues to shape future talents. His accolades have inspired many young athletes in Kerala and beyond. The Kerala government’s recognition comes alongside a formal request from the Kerala Olympic Association to grant him an IAS rank, highlighting the significance of his contributions to sports in the state. This request underscores a growing trend of honouring athletes who excel on international platforms, reflecting society’s increasing appreciation for sports and its role in national pride. Notably, this achievement marks a historic moment for Indian hockey, being the first time in 52 years that India has secured two consecutive Olympic medals in men’s hockey.
