On 23 October 2024, bomb detection dogs Oscar and Mylo retired from the Mumbai Police’s Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad in a heartfelt ceremony at Kala Chowki. Their service included significant roles in high-profile incidents such as the Antilia case in 2021, where Oscar located 20 gelatin sticks found in a suspicious vehicle, and during major events like the 2022 Mumbai Marathon and 2023 Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. The event was attended by their handlers and police officials, who celebrated their achievements with garlands and cheers. This retirement highlights the essential role of service animals in law enforcement and the bond they share with their human partners.

Honouring Canine Heroes

Oscar and Mylo, both Labrador Retrievers, have had distinguished careers within the Mumbai Police, playing pivotal roles in detecting explosives at major events. Their contributions included successful operations during the 2022 Mumbai Marathon, where their swift detection capabilities helped secure the event against potential threats, and during the 2023 Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, ensuring safety for thousands of attendees. Notably, Oscar was instrumental in the Antilia case on February 25, 2021, when he helped locate explosives in a vehicle parked outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s residence. The retirement ceremony featured emotional tributes from their handlers, who expressed deep gratitude for their unwavering loyalty. “Oscar and Mylo have not just been our partners but family,” said one handler, reflecting on their bond.

A Legacy of Service

Throughout their service, Oscar and Mylo were involved in numerous critical operations that included bomb threats at crowded venues and checks at VIP and VVIP events. Their keen sense of smell and extensive training allowed them to locate explosives swiftly, contributing to the prevention of potential disasters. The Mumbai Police have increasingly recognised the importance of canine units in maintaining public safety, leading to enhanced training programs that ensure the well-being of these dogs throughout their careers. Their retirement marks not just an end but a celebration of their significant contributions to community safety.
