A major fire broke out at a shop in Puri Plaza, 13 Block, Chain Wali Gali, Gaffar Market, Karol Bagh, Delhi, at around 1.30 am on Friday, November 6. The Delhi Fire Service deployed 22 fire-service vehicles, including water tenders, water bowsers and other emergency vehicles, as the blaze intensified. Additional water bowsers and lighting equipment were also sent to the spot to support the firefighting operation. Police-linked reports later said the fire was brought under control, with no deaths or injuries reported. The exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Fire Breaks Out
The blaze was reported from a shop at Puri Plaza in Gaffar Market’s Chain Wali Gali at around 1.30 am. Multiple fire tenders were immediately rushed to the location, with the number of fire-service units eventually rising to 22 as the intensity of the blaze increased.
The Delhi Fire Service also sent additional water bowsers and lighting equipment to assist personnel at the site. The scale of the response reflected the intensity of the fire and the need for sustained firefighting in the commercial area.
Four-Storey Building
Police-linked reports identified the premises as a four-storey commercial building housing mobile accessories businesses. According to a report citing DCP (Central Delhi) Rohit Rajbir Singh, the fire was reported at 1.28 am and originated in a ground-floor shop where mobile batteries were stored before spreading through the building.
The fire was subsequently reported to have been brought under control. No casualties or injuries had been reported in the latest updates.
Cause Under Investigation
Authorities have not yet established the cause of the fire. Police are examining whether overheating or overcharging of batteries stored at the premises may have triggered the blaze, but this remains a preliminary possibility rather than a confirmed finding.
Further assessment by the fire authorities and other relevant agencies is expected to establish how the fire started and what factors contributed to its spread. A final assessment of the damage was also awaited.
Emergency Response
The deployment of 22 fire-service vehicles reflects the scale of the response required to tackle the blaze in a busy commercial area. Water tenders and bowsers were used to support firefighting, while additional lighting equipment was sent to help emergency personnel work at the site during the early hours.
Police and fire personnel remained involved in the response as authorities dealt with the aftermath and assessed the affected premises.
Festive-Season Concern
The fire occurred on Dhanteras, ahead of Diwali, when commercial activity typically increases across Delhi. However, there is no evidence in the available reports linking the blaze to the festival or to any specific fire-safety violation.
The incident nevertheless highlights the importance of preparedness in busy markets, particularly in premises where electrical equipment and batteries are stored. Any determination of negligence or safety violations will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The absence of reported casualties is reassuring, but fires in busy commercial areas can quickly threaten workers, traders, visitors and neighbouring properties. Ensuring safe electrical systems, responsible storage of batteries and other potentially hazardous materials, accessible emergency routes and regular fire-safety checks can help reduce risks. Market associations and civic authorities must work together to identify vulnerabilities, conduct regular safety audits and ensure emergency services can reach congested areas without obstruction.
Shopkeepers and building owners should also be encouraged to treat fire preparedness as a shared responsibility rather than a regulatory formality. As authorities investigate what caused the Karol Bagh blaze, what more should market associations and civic authorities do to make densely packed commercial areas safer?
