A 23-year-old woman was allegedly held at knifepoint during an attempted robbery at a shoe and bag repair shop on Bengaluru’s busy 100 Feet Road in Indiranagar on October 31. The accused, identified as 40-year-old Prabhuraj, allegedly threatened her with a knife and attempted to take her 35-gram gold mangalsutra, valued at around ₹4.5 lakh, according to her complaint.

He allegedly restrained her using instant adhesive before dragging her outside when she raised an alarm. Bystanders and traffic police eventually overpowered him and handed him over to the Indiranagar Police. The woman was reported safe and did not suffer serious injuries. Prabhuraj was arrested and remanded to judicial custody.

Woman Held At Knifepoint

According to the complaint cited in police reports, the woman was working alone at the shop when Prabhuraj entered at around 11.45 am, wearing a helmet and gloves. He allegedly claimed that someone was chasing him before jumping over the reception counter and threatening her with a knife.

When the woman attempted to contact the shop owner, the accused allegedly covered her mouth and held the knife near her neck. He is also accused of using Fevikwik to stick her hands together and placing a piece of cloth in her mouth. The complaint states that he then allegedly attempted to take her gold mangalsutra, which weighed around 35 grams and was valued at approximately ₹4.5 lakh.

Crowd Intervenes

The situation escalated after the woman managed to free herself and raised an alarm. When people from nearby shops and passers-by gathered, Prabhuraj allegedly grabbed her by the hair and dragged her outside while holding a knife to her throat.

According to the FIR-based account, he allegedly threatened to harm the woman and used her as a shield while trying to escape. When people attempted to intervene, he reportedly brandished the knife. Traffic police personnel and members of the public then intervened and managed to overpower him before handing him over to the Indiranagar Police.

Police Begin Investigation

East Bengaluru Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikram Amathe said the accused was secured with the assistance of members of the public and that the woman was safe. Reports citing the FIR state that she suffered minor injuries to her neck and hands but did not sustain serious injuries.

Prabhuraj was arrested and produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody. Police registered a case under Section 309(6) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to voluntarily causing hurt while committing or attempting to commit robbery. Police are also verifying the accused’s background. Officials have indicated that he appeared to be mentally disturbed or depressed, but this remains a matter of police assessment and should not be treated as a confirmed medical diagnosis.

Incident Draws Attention

The incident occurred in broad daylight on one of Indiranagar’s busy commercial stretches. A video of the confrontation later circulated on social media, showing the accused allegedly restraining the woman while people gathered around the scene.

The case has highlighted concerns about the safety of people working alone in small commercial establishments, while the intervention of bystanders and traffic police prevented the situation from escalating further. Police are continuing their investigation into the alleged robbery, assault and the circumstances surrounding the accused’s actions.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The incident is a stark reminder that serious violence can unfold even in crowded public spaces, where people may assume that help is close at hand. The woman’s safety and dignity must remain central, while the alleged offender must face due legal process. The intervention by members of the public was crucial, but confronting an armed person can also put bystanders at risk, making timely police intervention and accessible emergency support essential.

If authorities find that the accused was facing personal or psychological difficulties, those concerns should be addressed through appropriate support alongside legal accountability. How can communities and authorities work together to make public spaces safer while ensuring that victims and vulnerable people receive timely support?
