Leaders and workers of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) are marching towards Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1, ahead of the INDIA bloc’s ongoing ‘Chalo Delhi’ rally against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The Opposition alliance has alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision process and demanded Kumar’s removal. A striking visual at the protest is a several-metre-long cloth banner displaying names that protesters claim have been deleted from voter lists. The rally seeks to highlight concerns over voting rights and electoral transparency.

Protesters Raise Concerns

SFI leaders and workers are marching from Harkishan Singh Surjeet Bhawan towards Ramlila Maidan as Opposition parties and other groups mobilise for the demonstration. According to ANI, CPI(M) state secretary Sanjay Chauhan has alleged that the electoral process is being manipulated and called for Kumar’s removal and legal proceedings against him.

He has also demanded that the SIR process be scrapped and the names of voters allegedly removed from electoral rolls be restored. Chauhan has claimed that more than 13.5 crore names have been deleted and called for reforms to the law governing the appointment of Election Commissioners. These figures and allegations reflect the Opposition’s claims and have not been independently established here.

Security Measures Tightened

The rally is taking place amid growing Opposition criticism of the Election Commission’s handling of electoral rolls and the SIR exercise. Security personnel, including police and paramilitary forces, have been deployed around Ramlila Maidan and along key routes in central Delhi as the demonstration continues. The INDIA bloc’s rally is coinciding with a separate BJP march in West Delhi.

The Opposition is demanding electoral reforms and greater accountability from the Election Commission, while its allegations against the CEC remain politically contested. The several-metre-long banner displaying names that protesters claim were deleted from voter lists is emerging as a prominent visual symbol of the rally.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Free and fair elections are essential to a functioning democracy, and concerns about voter-list revisions deserve a transparent, evidence-based response from the relevant authorities. At the same time, allegations of electoral irregularities must be examined carefully, with claims distinguished from verified findings.

Peaceful protests provide citizens with an important platform to demand accountability, while open dialogue between political parties and election authorities can help build public confidence in democratic institutions. How can India ensure that every eligible voter’s rights are protected while addressing concerns about the accuracy and integrity of electoral rolls?
