Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay distributed ₹17.04 crore in prize money to state-level winners of the Chief Minister’s Trophy 2026 and presented ₹6.85 crore in cash incentives to nine Tamil Nadu athletes who won medals at the fifth Asian Para Games in Japan. The ceremony was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on October 29, 2026.

The event also recognised the achievements of athletes across 45 sporting disciplines, saw the launch of a financial assistance scheme for 2,600 sportspersons, and marked the inauguration of two new sports facilities in Ramanathapuram and Salem. The initiatives form part of the state government’s efforts to strengthen sporting opportunities, support emerging talent and improve infrastructure for athletes, including those with disabilities.

Nine Para-Athletes Receive ₹6.85 Crore Achievements

Among the nine para-athletes honoured, badminton player Thulasimathi Murugesan received the highest incentive of ₹1.75 crore after winning one gold and two silver medals. Fellow badminton player Naveen Sivakumar received ₹1.05 crore for his gold and bronze medals, while para-athlete Nithyasree Sumathy Sivan was awarded ₹80 lakh. Long jumper Solai Raj Dharmaraj received ₹75 lakh for his gold medal in the T64 category. Other recipients included Manisha Ramadass and Jehan Dorab Madan, who received ₹60 lakh each, Sivarajan Solaimalai and Kasturi Raja Mani, who received ₹50 lakh each, and Baby Sahana Ravi, who received ₹30 lakh.

Tamil Nadu’s contingent secured 15 medals, comprising three gold, five silver and seven bronze, at the international competition. Nine of the 13 athletes representing the state returned with medals. Before the ceremony, Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna had praised the athletes and expressed the government’s commitment to supporting their ambitions. “The next dream is the Olympics, and we will stand by you in achieving your goals,” he said, while also highlighting the importance of mental strength in sporting achievements.

Over 10 Lakh Athletes Participate In Chief Minister’s Trophy 2026

The Chief Minister’s Trophy 2026 featured competitions across 45 sporting disciplines, five categories, 38 districts and six zones, with seven new sports introduced this year. According to the state government’s figures, 27,82,173 athletes registered online for the competition, while 10,36,543 participated in district- and zonal-level events. Of these, 32,603 athletes advanced to the state-level competitions conducted across 10 districts. The tournament had a total prize allocation of ₹38 crore, of which ₹21.34 crore was distributed among district- and zonal-level winners, while ₹17.04 crore went to state-level winners.

Chennai topped the state-level medal tally with 319 medals, including 142 gold, 97 silver and 80 bronze. Chengalpattu secured second place with 143 medals, followed by Coimbatore with 118 medals. Beyond recognising sporting achievements, the government also announced measures to strengthen the state’s sports ecosystem. Vijay inaugurated the Tamil Nadu Olympic Aquatics Academy at Pirappanvalasai in Ramanathapuram, constructed at a cost of ₹42.90 crore, and a multipurpose sports complex in Salem, built at an investment of ₹20 crore.

New Financial Assistance Scheme

The ceremony also witnessed the launch of the Sportsmen Development Allowance Scheme, aimed at providing financial assistance to approximately 2,600 athletes training at facilities managed by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT). With an annual budget allocation of ₹1.77 crore, the scheme will provide a monthly allowance of ₹500 to athletes training at designated sports centres and standard hostels, while those staying at Sports Hostels of Excellence will receive ₹1,000 per month. The assistance is intended to help athletes meet personal expenses during their training.

The recognition of para-athletes also comes amid broader efforts to improve opportunities for persons with disabilities in competitive sports. Before the event, Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna had spoken about plans to establish a dedicated para-sports facility as part of the proposed Olympic City. He also emphasised the need to increase awareness of para-sports in rural areas so that talented athletes from smaller towns and villages can access better opportunities. At the national level, India’s para-athletes also delivered a record performance at the 2026 Asian Para Games, winning 114 medals, comprising 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze, marking the country’s best-ever tally at the competition.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Recognising sporting achievements through financial incentives, better facilities and sustained institutional support is an important step towards building a more inclusive sporting culture. The achievements of Tamil Nadu’s para-athletes particularly remind us that sporting excellence is determined by talent, discipline and determination, not by physical ability alone. However, celebrating champions must go hand in hand with creating opportunities for those who are still trying to enter the sporting world.

Access to quality coaching, accessible infrastructure, equipment, financial assistance and equal representation should extend beyond major cities and established athletes. Government initiatives must translate into consistent support at the grassroots, allowing children from economically weaker backgrounds, rural communities and persons with disabilities to pursue their ambitions without unnecessary barriers. Every athlete deserves the opportunity to compete, grow and be recognised. How can India build a sporting ecosystem where talent, rather than financial circumstances or physical limitations, determines how far an athlete can go?
