India’s Under-20 women’s Rugby Sevens team defeated New Zealand’s Māori U20 side Hine Toa 17–0 at the Rajgir Sports Complex in Bihar on October 27. The match was part of the India–New Zealand U20 Rugby Series, organised under the “100 Years of Unity through Sport” initiative marking a century of sporting ties between the two countries.

The wider programme brought together young Indian and Māori players through competition, joint training and cultural exchange. Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse said the series showed how sport can transcend borders, strengthen bilateral relations and foster cultural understanding.

India Keep Hine Toa Scoreless

The Indian women’s side produced a commanding defensive performance to shut out Hine Toa and secure a 17–0 victory. Reports from the match said India led 12–0 at half-time before extending the advantage in the second half. The women’s fixture was one of four Rugby Sevens matches played during the concluding phase of the series.

The men’s contest went the other way, with New Zealand’s U20 Māori side Tama Toa defeating India 32–0. The results underline that the Rajgir programme was an international youth exchange rather than a conventional bilateral tournament involving the senior national teams.

A Māori-Indian Exchange

Hine Toa and Tama Toa formed the visiting New Zealand delegation, with 24 young Māori players selected from across New Zealand. Rugby India said the tour, which ran from October 22 to 28, included joint training sessions, match activities and cultural and community engagements alongside India’s U20 squads.

The programme culminated in four Sevens fixtures, including two mixed-team matches in which Indian and New Zealand players played alongside each other. Rugby India President Rahul Bose described those matches as a particularly meaningful part of the exchange, highlighting rugby’s values of “respect, teamwork and friendship”.

Building Rugby Connections

The Rajgir series is part of a broader effort to deepen sporting cooperation between India and New Zealand. Rugby India said New Zealand’s U20 rugby teams were visiting India for such a series for the first time. The partnership had already expanded in May, when New Zealand Rugby coaching educators conducted a development programme for 35 Indian coaches at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

The Rajgir programme therefore combined competitive exposure for young players with coaching development and cultural exchange. Bihar Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh said hosting the series was an opportunity to strengthen the state’s sporting ecosystem and allow young athletes from both countries to share experiences and learn from one another.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The 17–0 victory is an important moment for India’s young women rugby players, but the larger value of the Rajgir series lies beyond the scoreboard. Indian and Māori athletes competed against each other, trained together and then took the field as teammates — offering a powerful example of how sport can create connections across cultures.

Raksha Khadse described the exchange as an example of sport strengthening bilateral relationships, while Rahul Bose emphasised respect, teamwork and friendship. At a time when international relationships are often viewed through competition and rivalry, can more youth sporting exchanges help build the understanding and friendships that last beyond the final whistle?
