Five people were killed and another injured in a shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati, Assam, at around 9 pm on Monday, October 26, following a suspected dispute between the hotel’s owners and its leaseholder, police said.
The accused, identified as Ghanakanta Gogoi, who had reportedly leased the property the previous year, was apprehended within an hour of the incident. Police also recovered a licensed .32-bore pistol suspected to have been used in the shooting.
Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta said preliminary investigations suggested that the violence stemmed from a disagreement over the hotel’s lease agreement. Four of the deceased belonged to the hotel-owning family, while the fifth victim and the injured survivor were from their village.
The injured person was receiving medical treatment, while police said a scientific and thorough investigation was underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The precise motive and sequence of events remain under investigation, and the suspected connection to the lease dispute has not yet been conclusively established.
Five Lives Lost
The shooting took place at Hotel Bilas Inn in the Bora Service area, opposite the arterial GS Road in Guwahati. According to the police account, six people sustained gunshot injuries, five of whom later succumbed to their injuries.
The incident claimed the lives of four people belonging to the hotel-owning family, while the fifth deceased person was from the same village as the family. The injured survivor was also from that village and was undergoing treatment, officials said.
The identities of the deceased had not been formally disclosed in the initial reports, as authorities were working to verify the details. Addressing reporters after the incident, Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta described it as an unfortunate firing incident and confirmed that the accused had been apprehended and the weapon seized. He said, “Six persons sustained gunshot injuries, and five succumbed to it.
The accused has been apprehended and the weapon seized.” The recovery of the suspected firearm and the swift apprehension of the accused are significant developments in the investigation. However, the deaths of several people connected to one family have left a community facing an immense loss, while the circumstances that led to the confrontation remain a central question for investigators.
Dispute Under Probe
Preliminary police findings indicate that the suspected shooting was linked to a property dispute involving the hotel owners and Gogoi, who had taken the establishment on lease the previous year. A lease agreement sets out the terms under which a property is used or managed, and disagreements can arise over contractual obligations, financial arrangements or other aspects of the agreement.
However, police have not conclusively established the specific disagreement that preceded the shooting, and it would be premature to attribute a definitive motive to the accused before the investigation is complete. Mahanta said the case remained at an early stage and that all aspects were being examined.
According to reports, Gogoi was apprehended within an hour of the incident, with police recovering a licensed .32-bore pistol suspected to have been used in the attack. Investigators are expected to examine the available evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events and establish the circumstances in which the shooting occurred. The case also highlights the importance of distinguishing between the suspected trigger for a crime and a motive established through evidence.
While the alleged connection to the lease agreement provides an initial line of inquiry, it does not by itself explain how the dispute escalated or whether any warning signs preceded the incident. No independently verified response from the accused explaining his account of the dispute was available in the initial reports.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Disagreements over property, business arrangements and contractual obligations can be stressful, but violence can never be an acceptable way to resolve them. Five people have lost their lives, families have been devastated, and another person is recovering from gunshot injuries.
The immediate priority must be a fair, evidence-led investigation that establishes what happened, identifies the circumstances that led to the shooting and ensures accountability through due process. At the same time, this tragedy is a reminder of the importance of peaceful dispute resolution, access to legal remedies and a willingness to seek dialogue before disagreements become confrontations.
Mediation, legal advice and appropriate civil proceedings can provide ways to address disputes without putting lives at risk. These options cannot guarantee that every conflict will be resolved amicably, but they offer alternatives to retaliation and violence. It is equally important not to draw conclusions about guilt or motive before investigators have established the facts.
A responsible response must recognise the victims’ loss, respect the rights of those involved and allow the legal process to proceed without speculation. Building a more peaceful society requires both accountability when violence occurs and a stronger commitment to resolving disagreements through dialogue and lawful means.
