Ahmedabad will host the 2029 Senior World Weightlifting Championships, marking the first time India will stage the senior edition of the prestigious global event. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced the decision on October 25 following its Executive Board meeting in Ningbo, China. India secured the hosting rights after competing bids from Russia and Venezuela.

According to Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) president Sahdev Yadav, the 2029 championships will also serve as a qualifier for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, giving Indian lifters an opportunity to compete for berths at the home Games. IWF General Secretary José Quiñones said the successful bids reflected the sport’s growing global reach.

A Historic First

The 2029 championship will be the maiden senior Weightlifting World Championships held in India, bringing some of the world’s leading lifters, coaches and officials to Ahmedabad. The International Weightlifting Federation(IWF) awarded the hosting rights after considering bids from India, Russia and Venezuela, with Moscow subsequently selected to host the 2030 senior World Championships. Venezuela will host the 2028 IWF World Junior Championships, while Prishtina in Kosovo will stage the 2028 World Youth Championships.

Welcoming the decision, IWF General Secretary José Quiñones said the federation was satisfied with the quality of the bids and expressed confidence that the championships would be successful. He also noted that India, Kosovo and Venezuela will each host an IWF World event for the first time, describing the development as a sign of weightlifting’s growing international presence.

India Builds Experience

The decision follows India’s recent experience in hosting major international weightlifting competitions. Ahmedabad hosted the 2025 Commonwealth Senior, Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships at the Naranpura Sports Complex, while Gandhinagar hosted the 2026 Asian Senior Weightlifting Championships at the Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 11 to 17.

Indian Weightlifting Federation(IWLF) president Sahdev Yadav said these two events played an important role in convincing the international body that India had the capacity to stage the senior World Championships. “The Commonwealth and Asian Championships were a turning point for the country,” Yadav said, adding that the experience encouraged the IWF to award India the senior Worlds.

He also said hosting the 2029 event could help more Indian lifters qualify for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with the home advantage potentially increasing India’s representation.

Gujarat’s Sporting Calendar

The announcement further strengthens Gujarat’s position as a major destination for international sporting events. Ahmedabad is scheduled to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, making the 2029 World Championships particularly significant as part of the build-up to the multi-sport event. The championship will also give Indian athletes an opportunity to compete at the highest level in front of a home audience, while exposing the country’s sporting infrastructure to an international field.

For Indian weightlifting, the event represents an opportunity that extends beyond hosting rights. A home World Championships can provide greater visibility to the sport, encourage young athletes to take it up and give India’s established and emerging lifters a chance to compete against the world’s best without travelling abroad.

The focus in the years ahead will be on ensuring that the event leaves behind stronger facilities, better athlete support and a sustainable pathway for the next generation.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Hosting a senior World Championship is a significant achievement, but its real value will be measured by what it creates beyond the event itself. India now has an opportunity to use the 2029 championships to strengthen grassroots weightlifting, improve support for athletes and make international-level sport more accessible to young people across the country.

Sporting events can also bring people together through a shared celebration of discipline, perseverance and fair competition. Can Ahmedabad’s 2029 World Championships become a lasting turning point for Indian weightlifting and inspire a new generation to pursue the sport?
