Social innovator Archana Jaisal established Shiksha Saathi to transform rural education starting in her Ghazipur startup journey across Uttar Pradesh, delivering affordable coaching, comprehensive teacher training, and economic independence for rural women in village classrooms through a scalable education startup that eliminates learning gaps, drives women empowerment, honors her Banaras Hindu University background, improves child literacy, and strengthens grassroots teaching traditions.

Growing up in a family shaped by hardship, she learned early on that education holds the power to alter a family’s destiny across generations. Her late father, Jagdish Ram, lost his father at a young age and began pulling a rickshaw at seventeen to support his relatives. Despite the demanding physical labor, he carried his textbooks inside the rickshaw, studying during rest breaks until securing a stable job with the Indian Railways. That hard-earned victory allowed his children to pursue higher education and build dignified lives in Varanasi.

Discovering Learning Disparities In Villages

After earning her postgraduate degree in Economics from Banaras Hindu University, Archana observed a troubling pattern during visits to her extended family in rural areas. Children were attending local schools daily, yet when asked simple questions about their schoolwork, students in Class 7 struggled to recall basic concepts or read fundamental text lessons.

Archana realized that school enrollment alone did not guarantee functional learning. Rural families faced a double hurdle: quality coaching centers were located far away in urban centers, and daily travel was financially and logistically impossible for most village households. Additionally, educated young women living in these rural areas had virtually no opportunities to secure local employment or achieve financial independence.

Building Affordable Neighborhood Classrooms

In 2022, Archana launched a grassroots initiative initially called Your Coaching, which was formally registered as Shiksha Saathi in 2023. The core strategy was straightforward: instead of expecting rural children to travel to distant cities for supplementary academic help, the organization brought structured, high-quality learning directly into village neighborhoods.

To ensure no child was excluded due to poverty, monthly tuition fees were kept at a nominal rate, starting at approximately one hundred rupees for primary school children. For families completely unable to pay, academic instruction was provided free of charge, ensuring that financial constraints never barred a motivated child from receiving guidance.

Professionalizing Local Women Educators

As the learning centers expanded, Archana encountered another operational challenge. At one center, students reported that a local teacher was struggling with basic English grammar. Archana recognized that expanding access was meaningless without maintaining rigorous teaching standards, prompting her to establish the Educator Training Programme.

Every six months, Shiksha Saathi recruits batches of young rural women and equips them with age-appropriate pedagogical techniques, classroom management skills, and subject fundamentals. This dual-impact framework solves two critical community challenges simultaneously: village children receive structured academic support, while local women secure respectable, paid employment within their own communities.

Expanding Reach Across Uttar Pradesh

Today, Shiksha Saathi operates more than seventy-eight active learning centers across six districts in Uttar Pradesh, providing academic support to over seven thousand six hundred students. The startup employs sixty-seven permanent teachers and has trained over seven hundred forty rural women through its dedicated Educator Training Programme.

By transforming local women into respected neighborhood educators, the organization fosters community trust and long-term sustainability. Girls who once lacked career prospects now earn independent incomes, fund their own higher studies, and serve as visible role models for the young students sitting in their village classrooms every day.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Archana Jaisal’s Shiksha Saathi demonstrates how grassroots innovation can solve complex educational and economic challenges in rural India. By combining affordable student coaching with structured training for local women, the initiative creates a sustainable cycle of learning and empowerment. Supporting community-driven educational models remains essential to ensuring every child receives the quality learning they deserve.

How can government rural development programs collaborate with grassroots education startups to scale teacher training models across under-resourced district schools?
