Andhra Pradesh has extended the nomination process by 48 hours in four urban local bodies following Supreme Court intervention over allegations of violence, intimidation and obstruction faced by candidates during the filing process. State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha announced that candidates can submit their nomination papers on October 23 and 24, between 11 am and 3 pm.

The decision follows a petition by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), which alleged that its candidates were attacked, threatened or prevented from reaching nomination centres. The revised arrangements aim to provide eligible candidates with another opportunity to contest. Polling across the state’s 100 urban local bodies is scheduled for November 1, while counting of votes is set for November 3.

48-Hour Extension

The additional nomination window covers Kadapa Municipal Corporation, Rajampet Municipality and Mydukur Municipality in Kadapa district, and Tirupati Municipal Corporation in Tirupati district. Candidates can file their nomination papers between 11 am and 3 pm on October 23 and 24 at the designated locations specified by the relevant election authorities.

The revised process follows complaints that some candidates faced intimidation, physical attacks or obstruction while attempting to submit their papers. The allegations have raised concerns about whether all candidates were given a fair opportunity to participate in the local elections. The State Election Commission has allowed the additional window in the four identified urban local bodies after examining reports and representations relating to the nomination process.

Supreme Court Intervention

The decision follows a petition filed by the YSRCP after allegations that its candidates were prevented from filing nominations during the original nomination period, which ran from October 16 to 18. The party approached the Supreme Court after the Andhra Pradesh High Court declined to extend the deadline.

The Supreme Court directed the State Election Commission to examine the complaints and supporting evidence, including representations from affected candidates, before deciding on the need for additional time. The court also emphasised the importance of ensuring adequate security for candidates and election offices. The Commission subsequently revised the nomination arrangements for the four urban local bodies. The final list of contesting candidates is scheduled to be published on October 25.

Polling across the 100 urban local bodies will take place on November 1, with counting scheduled for November 3. The allegations of intimidation and obstruction remain subject to verification and should not be treated as established findings.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Local elections are an essential part of democracy, bringing governance closer to citizens and allowing communities to choose their representatives. Every eligible candidate must be able to participate without fear of violence, intimidation or political pressure.

While allegations of obstruction must be investigated impartially and accountability ensured wherever wrongdoing is established, all parties must respect due process and avoid escalating political tensions. Election authorities have a responsibility to create a fair and secure environment, while political parties must uphold democratic principles even amid disagreements.

Providing an additional opportunity to candidates may help address concerns about the nomination process, but transparency and consistent enforcement of election rules remain equally important. How can political parties and election authorities work together to ensure that every candidate gets a fair chance to contest elections?
