Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced cash incentives totalling ₹2.2 crore for six athletes from the state following their medal-winning performances at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Japan. Jehan Dorab Madan, Baby Sahana Ravi, Manisha Ramadass and Nithya Sre Sivan will each receive ₹30 lakh, while Sivarajan Solaimalai and Kasthuri Rajamani will receive ₹50 lakh each.

Their achievements span para table tennis, badminton and powerlifting. Vijay congratulated the athletes, saying their performances had brought pride to Tamil Nadu and India and would inspire young para athletes.

Jehan Madan’s Achievement

Jehan Dorab Madan’s bronze medal in the men’s singles Class 1 event reflects his determination to continue competing after a life-changing accident. Originally from Chennai, Madan developed an interest in racket sports during childhood, picking up a tennis racket at the age of six. He later pursued motorsport as an amateur racing driver, competing in single-seater open-wheel cars and achieving podium finishes.

In 2007, a road accident during a business trip to Mumbai left Madan paralysed from the chest down. However, he continued pursuing his sporting ambitions. He took up para table tennis in 2021, studying videos of Paralympic matches to understand the techniques used by wheelchair athletes.

His progress followed quickly. Within months of taking up the sport, Madan won silver at the National Para Table Tennis Championships. He later secured his first international gold medal at the 2023 ITTF Egypt Para Open. According to IANS, he had won 13 medals in ITTF tournaments by October 2026, including one gold, four silver and eight bronze medals.

At the Asian Para Games, Madan reached the semi-finals but lost 3-0 to South Korea’s Kim Hyeonuk, with scores of 11-4, 11-7 and 11-3. He consequently secured bronze. The Tamil Nadu government announced a ₹30 lakh incentive in recognition of his performance. Modi also congratulated Madan, saying his success reflected his passion and skills, and wished him further achievements.

Sahana Ravi Makes History

Baby Sahana Ravi’s bronze medal in women’s singles Class 9 marked a significant milestone for Indian para table tennis. She became the first Indian athlete to win a medal in the standing category at the Asian Para Games, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. The achievement came on her debut at the continental event.

Sahana began playing table tennis in 2014 while studying in Class 5. According to her published sports profile, she joined Chennai’s Coronation Club in 2015 and trained under her first coach, Raj Aravindan Alagar. She later moved to open schooling through the National Institute of Open Schooling after completing Class 9, allowing her to dedicate more time to training. Her ITTF profile identifies her as an Indian Class 9 athlete and records her participation in international tournaments from 2017.

Her latest achievement adds to her record in national and international competitions. Modi congratulated Sahana, describing her bronze medal as a moment of immense pride and saying it would encourage more young athletes to dream big. Vijay also praised her hard work and dedication, announcing a ₹30 lakh incentive and wishing her continued success.

Manisha And Nithya Rewarded

Para badminton players Manisha Ramadass and Nithya Sre Sivan will each receive ₹30 lakh under the state government’s announced incentives. Their inclusion extends the recognition beyond para table tennis to athletes competing in other disciplines.

The rewards form part of the government’s recognition of six Tamil Nadu athletes who achieved success at the Asian Para Games. Their individual medal categories and match results should be included only after confirmation against official competition results or the relevant government announcements.

Sivarajan Wins Silver

Sivarajan Solaimalai will receive ₹50 lakh after winning silver in the men’s doubles para badminton event at the Asian Para Games. The Tamil Nadu government confirmed the incentive in its October 21 announcement, congratulating him and the Indian team on their achievement.

Vijay praised Sivarajan’s hard work and perseverance, noting that his success would encourage young para athletes from Tamil Nadu. The award is the second-highest individual incentive category in the six-athlete announcement.

Kasthuri’s Powerlifting Medal

Kasthuri Rajamani won silver in the women’s 67kg para powerlifting event at the Asian Para Games and will receive ₹50 lakh from the Tamil Nadu government.

The Chief Minister congratulated her on the achievement, describing her success as an example of confidence, hard work and perseverance. The government said her performance would provide fresh encouragement to young para athletes in the state. The Prime Minister’s Office also published a congratulatory announcement recognising her silver medal.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Recognising para athletes through financial incentives is an important step towards building a more inclusive sporting culture. However, meaningful inclusion requires more than rewards after a victory. Accessible facilities, specialised equipment, qualified coaches and sustained financial support are essential to help athletes with disabilities develop their abilities and compete at the highest level.

Madan’s return to competitive sport and Sahana’s rise in para table tennis demonstrate the importance of determination and opportunity. Their achievements should encourage governments, schools and sporting organisations to create pathways for more aspiring athletes, regardless of disability.

How can India make sporting opportunities more accessible so that every athlete receives the support needed to realise their potential?
