Indian para sprinter Simran Sharma clinched her second gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games, winning the women’s 100m T12 final in a Games-record 12.02 seconds on Wednesday, October 21. The 26-year-old had already won the 200m T12 gold a day earlier, also setting a Games record with 24.80 seconds. In the 100m final, Simran finished ahead of Iran’s Hajar Safarzadeh, who clocked 12.30 seconds, while Indonesia’s Made Ni Putri took bronze in 12.51 seconds.

Simran’s latest victory also marked a major improvement from her silver-medal finish in the event at Hangzhou 2022, where she had clocked 12.68 seconds. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her, describing her “speed, determination and dedication to sporting excellence” as commendable and wishing her continued success.

Record-Breaking Sprint

The para-athelete from Uttar Pradesh had already set a Games record of 12.13 seconds in the 100m heats, but went even faster in the final, cutting another 0.11 seconds off the mark to finish in 12.02 seconds. The T12 classification is for athletes with moderate visual impairment, with athletes competing alongside guides where required.

Her performance completed a remarkable sprint double in Nagoya, following Tuesday’s 200m T12 victory in 24.80 seconds. The result is particularly significant because Simran had finished second in both sprint events at Hangzhou 2022. She has now converted both those silver-medal finishes into gold at the 2026 Games.

Comeback With New Guide

The back-to-back victories have come during an important phase in Simran’s career. The sprinter, who won a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics and is a world champion in the 100m, is competing with a new guide, Shivam, after her previous guide Umar Saifi was banned following a doping violation. Before her 200m gold, Simran had spoken about the physical demands of competing in multiple races, saying her body felt tight because recovery had not been ideal.

Despite those challenges, she delivered two Games-record performances in successive days. Her ability to maintain speed, focus and coordination across both events highlights the trust required between a visually impaired sprinter and their guide. The victories also underline how quickly she has adapted to a new competitive partnership while continuing to perform at the highest level. Her 2026 campaign therefore represents not only a medal-winning run but also a strong return to the top of Asian para-athletics.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Simran Sharma’s golden double is a powerful reminder that sporting success is built not only on talent, but also on resilience, preparation, support and the ability to adapt when circumstances change. Her journey with a new guide and her progression from two silvers in Hangzhou to two Games-record golds in Nagoya show why para-athletes deserve sustained investment, visibility and equal recognition beyond major tournaments.

Celebrating such achievements should also mean creating an ecosystem where athletes with disabilities have access to quality coaching, infrastructure, competition and long-term support. What more can India do to ensure that para-athletes like Simran receive the recognition and opportunities they deserve throughout their careers?
