Kushal Raj Chakravorty, in collaboration with dedicated educators and social donors, founded the Lotus Petal Foundation to transform under-resourced lives through structured, high-quality education. Having spent years climbing the corporate ladder across multinational companies like HCL, BPL, Amway, and IKEA, Chakravorty held a comfortable global leadership position. However, a single winter morning in Gurugram drastically altered his life path, prompting him to trade executive boardrooms for grassroots classrooms.

A Cold Morning Realization

In November 2011, while dropping his daughters off at their school bus stop in Gurugram, Chakravorty noticed two young children walking past in the freezing cold. They wore no sweaters, and one lacked footwear entirely. The stark contrast between his own well-clothed children and those walking barefoot stayed with him.

Tracing the children to a makeshift school operating out of a local temple, he discovered 250 eager students learning in severely resource-strapped conditions. Although he initially provided warm clothes, shoes, and basic supplies, Chakravorty realized that temporary charity could not solve systemic poverty. Children were missing years of formal schooling, remaining trapped in an endless cycle of low-income survival without access to real opportunity.

Building Lotus Petal Foundation

Determined to create a long-term solution, Chakravorty registered the Lotus Petal Foundation. In April 2013, using his personal savings and a loan of approximately 40 lakh rupees, he opened a fast-track learning center inside a single rented room in a Gurugram commercial arcade.

The initiative began with just six students who were years behind their expected academic levels. Chakravorty designed a condensed five-year fast-track educational program that allowed older out-of-school children to cover foundational coursework up to Class 12. Crucially, the model integrated vocational training, communication development, and digital literacy to ensure students graduated with practical workplace skills.

Leaving the Corporate World

For over three years, Chakravorty managed the budding foundation while continuing his high-profile global role at IKEA. By September 2016, after the first cohort of students successfully cleared their CBSE board examinations, he realized the model was fully viable.

Recognizing that building an impactful social institution required absolute commitment, he resigned from IKEA to lead the foundation full-time. His corporate background in systems thinking, resource management, and organizational scaling proved invaluable. By 2017, with support from an IIM Lucknow alumnus, the foundation acquired land and constructed a campus in Gurugram that currently educates over 1,200 students from kindergarten to Class 12.

Holistic Child Support Systems

Understanding that academic learning cannot occur when a child is hungry or distressed, the Lotus Petal Foundation addresses every aspect of a student’s well-being. The organization provides two nutritious meals daily, routine health checkups, dental care, and professional mental health counseling.

To foster dignity and long-term parental involvement, the foundation charges a nominal monthly fee of 1,500 rupees, which is fully returned as scholarships when parents remain actively engaged and children demonstrate steady academic progress. With a tight teacher-student ratio of 1:14 and over 250 staff members, including counselors and educators, the foundation acts as a complete support network for under-resourced families.

Scaling Impact Across India

The foundation’s transformative impact is evident in its alumni network. Students who entered the program years behind their peers have gone on to become software quality assurance professionals, technical support advisors, teachers, and in 2024, one of the original six students graduated as a medical doctor.

During the pandemic, the organization launched the Vidya Sahyog initiative to deliver digital education to remote classrooms. Today, this hybrid model supports over 275 partner schools across 16 states, reaching more than 10,000 students nationwide and delivering over 90,000 hours of quality instruction.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Kushal Raj Chakravorty’s journey demonstrates the extraordinary power of applying corporate leadership skills toward social development. By building holistic, scalable, and dignified educational systems, the Lotus Petal Foundation proves that every child can thrive when given equal opportunities and consistent care. Bridging the educational divide remains essential for constructing an inclusive and prosperous nation.
