The parents of 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari were released around 5 am on October 15, 2026, hours after Delhi Police detained them during an overnight protest near India Gate against Dushyant Kumar Gautam’s appointment as Sikkim Governor.
Ankita’s father issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Centre, demanding that the appointment be cancelled and warning of nationwide protests if the demand was not met. The family has alleged that Gautam is linked to the unresolved ‘VIP angle’ in Ankita’s September 2022 murder, an allegation he denies.
The protest comes amid an ongoing Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe sought by the family, despite three men already having been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder.

Parents Demand Answers
The protest took place on October 14 near India Gate in New Delhi, where Ankita’s parents staged a sit-in demanding that Gautam’s appointment be put on hold until the CBI completes its investigation into the alleged VIP connection.
Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, visited the family and expressed support for their demand. According to reports, the parents were detained in the early hours of October 15, along with several Congress leaders, and subsequently released around 5 am. A source cited by The Tribune said the detention was carried out in view of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita being imposed in the New Delhi district.
During the detention, Ankita’s father told PTI Videos, “We give a 24-hour ultimatum to the government for the cancellation of Dushyant’s appointment. Nationwide protests will be launched if the government does not accept our demand.” Ankita’s mother also warned that the family would continue its protest and consider a hunger strike if its demand was not accepted.
Gautam, a former BJP national general secretary and the party’s former in-charge for Uttarakhand, was appointed Governor of Sikkim by President Droupadi Murmu on October 12 as part of a reshuffle involving six states.
The appointment was formally announced through a Rashtrapati Bhavan press communiqué, which stated that the appointments would take effect when the individuals assumed charge. The family’s opposition centres on Gautam’s alleged connection to the VIP whose identity and possible role have been questioned since the murder.
These claims must be distinguished from established judicial findings: Gautam has denied the allegations, and reporting on October 14 said he had not been named as an accused in a chargesheet. The family is demanding that the appointment be reconsidered while the CBI investigation remains underway.

From Murder Trial To CBI Probe
Ankita’s case first drew national attention in September 2022, when she went missing from Vanantra Resort in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district, where she worked as a receptionist. Her body was recovered from the Chilla canal on September 24.
Investigators arrested resort owner Pulkit Arya, son of former BJP leader Vinod Arya, and his associates Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta. The prosecution argued that Ankita had resisted pressure to provide ‘special services’ to a guest at the resort, and that this dispute preceded her murder.
On May 30, 2025, a court in Kotdwar convicted all three men and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The verdict marked a significant development in the criminal proceedings, but it did not end public questions surrounding the alleged VIP connection.
The issue resurfaced in January 2026 after renewed protests and the emergence of an audio clip brought fresh attention to the case. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recommended a CBI investigation, saying his decision respected the requests and sentiments of Ankita’s parents.
Her father subsequently said the inquiry needed to focus on the VIP angle and go beyond what had already been established. The family’s continuing demand reflects a distinction central to the case: the conviction of the three men does not, by itself, establish whether any other person was involved.
Equally, allegations against an individual cannot be treated as proof of criminal responsibility without corroborating evidence and due legal process. The CBI investigation is therefore a key development, although its outcome must be judged by its findings rather than speculation or political claims.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The continued anguish of Ankita’s parents highlights why justice must be measured not only by convictions but also by public confidence in the investigative process. Their questions deserve to be addressed through a transparent, impartial and evidence-based inquiry, without intimidation or the premature assumption that any person accused in public discourse is guilty.
At the same time, public officials and political parties must avoid turning a grieving family’s demand into an arena for unsubstantiated claims. The authorities should communicate clearly about the investigation, explain what can lawfully be disclosed and ensure that any credible evidence is examined without favour or fear. Peaceful protest is an important democratic avenue for seeking accountability, and law enforcement must handle such gatherings proportionately while maintaining public order.
Ankita’s death also remains a reminder of the vulnerability of young workers and the importance of safe workplaces where complaints of coercion or harassment are taken seriously. Can transparent investigation and timely communication help answer the family’s remaining questions while ensuring that accountability rests on evidence and due process?
