India’s women’s hockey team ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold after defeating China 1-0 in the final at Kakamigahara, Japan, on October 2, 2026. Lalremsiami scored the decisive goal in the 10th minute, marking her 200th senior international appearance, while goalkeeper Savita Punia made a crucial penalty-stroke save as India held on to its lead.
The victory gave India its first women’s hockey Asian Games gold since 1982 and secured qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The triumph was especially significant for Mizoram, as Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi became the state’s first Asian Games medallists as members of India’s gold-winning team. The Mizoram government has announced ₹40 lakh for each player in recognition of their achievement.
Lalremsiami’s Journey
Lalremsiami’s historic goal added another milestone to an already significant international career. The 26-year-old forward made her senior international debut in 2017 and reached 200 appearances during the Asian Games final against China. Hockey India records show that she had previously won Asian Games silver in 2018 and bronze in 2022, making the 2026 gold her first Asian Games title.
On October 2, she scored from open play in the 10th minute to put India ahead. The goal proved decisive as China were unable to find an equaliser. For Lalremsiami, the moment combined an individual milestone with one of the biggest achievements in Indian women’s hockey.
Lalthantluangi’s Journey
Lalthantluangi represents a younger generation of Indian hockey players emerging into the senior team. Hockey India’s official Asian Games squad lists her as a defender and records that she made her senior international debut during the 2026 FIH Nations Cup, where India won the tournament unbeaten.
She was subsequently selected for the 20-member Asian Games squad and featured in the team that defeated China in the final. Her achievement alongside Lalremsiami also marked a historic moment for their home state. According to the Government of Mizoram, the two became the first athletes from Mizoram to win Asian Games medals, with the state’s first medal being gold.
A Historic Homecoming
India’s victory was built on more than Lalremsiami’s early goal. China, the defending Asian Games champions, applied sustained pressure, particularly in the final quarter, but India’s defence held firm. Savita Punia’s penalty-stroke save was among the decisive moments that kept India ahead until the final hooter. Hockey India described the victory as India’s return to the top of Asian Games women’s hockey after 44 years and confirmed that the result booked the team’s place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Back in Mizoram, Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi received a welcome before being felicitated by Chief Minister Lalduhoma at a programme in Aizawl. The state government announced ₹40 lakh for each player, comprising ₹25 lakh under the Mizoram State Incentive Cash Award Scheme and ₹15 lakh under the Bana Kaih Scheme. Lalduhoma said it was a matter of “great pride” that Mizoram had begun its Asian Games medal journey with gold, while Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar called the victory a landmark achievement.
It is truly an honour to return home with an Asian Games gold medal and receive such a warm welcome from Mizoram 🥇🇮🇳 Thank you, Hon’ble Chief Minister, @Lal_Duhoma @TeteaHmar for your kind words, support, and encouragement. Feeling truly blessed, grateful, and proud to be home. https://t.co/wK2xx9x6E2

The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi’s achievement is a reminder that sporting success is not confined to India’s biggest cities or traditional sporting centres. Their historic medal has also given Mizoram a new place in the Asian Games record books, while the younger Lalthantluangi’s emergence alongside an established international player shows the importance of creating pathways for successive generations.
Government recognition is meaningful, but lasting progress requires continued investment in coaching, facilities, grassroots programmes and opportunities for young athletes.
As Mizoram celebrates its two daughters, how can India ensure that more young sporting talent from smaller towns and states gets the same opportunity to reach the world stage?
