Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has announced that the monthly pension for persons with disabilities in the state will be increased again soon, though the revised amount and implementation date have not yet been announced. He made the announcement in Gorakhpur on September 30 while distributing assistive devices to 509 beneficiaries under the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’. Adityanath said the pension had earlier been raised from ₹300 to ₹500 and then to ₹1,000 a month.

He also directed officials to establish District Disability Rehabilitation Centres (DDRCs) across all 18 divisions and organise camps in every Assembly constituency during 2026-27 to identify eligible persons who are not receiving pension benefits. The announcement comes as the state’s 2026-27 Budget provides ₹2,140 crore for schemes for persons with disabilities, with more than 11 lakh beneficiaries currently receiving ₹1,000 per month.

‘Disability Should Not Become An Obstacle To Talent’

Speaking at the Gorakhpur Club, Adityanath said persons with disabilities should be provided opportunities rather than treated only with sympathy. “Physical challenges cannot become an obstacle to talent. Talent does not need sympathy, it needs opportunity,” he said, underlining the need to support people with disabilities from an early age.

During the programme, organised jointly by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Ltd, 664 assistive devices worth around ₹1.25 crore were distributed among 509 beneficiaries. These included motorised tricycles, e-tricycles, smart canes, Braille kits, hearing aids, smartphones and artificial limbs.

Government Plans Wider Rehabilitation And Outreach

The proposed pension hike is part of a broader focus on disability welfare in Uttar Pradesh. The state Budget for 2026-27 has allocated ₹2,140 crore for schemes for persons with disabilities, an 8% increase over the previous year. It states that more than 11 lakh people are receiving ₹1,000 a month under the disability pension scheme, for which ₹1,470 crore has been proposed. The Budget also notes that the pension was ₹300 before 2017.

Minister of State for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Narendra Kashyap said the department’s budget had increased from ₹665 crore under the previous Samajwadi Party government to ₹2,200 crore in 2026-27. He also said Uttar Pradesh currently has 55 early-childhood day-care centres for children with disabilities, with 28 more planned. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has asked officials to set up DDRCs across all 18 divisions, with the Gorakhpur centre already operational. Camps are also planned across Assembly constituencies to identify people who remain outside the welfare system.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Financial assistance can play an important role in helping persons with disabilities meet everyday needs, but meaningful inclusion extends beyond a monthly pension. Accessible healthcare, education, transport, public infrastructure, assistive technology and employment opportunities are equally important to ensuring dignity and independence. The government’s latest announcement places attention on both financial support and reaching people who may not yet be connected to welfare schemes.

The next important step will be clear communication about the revised pension amount, timely implementation and ensuring that eligible beneficiaries can access the support without unnecessary barriers. Building an inclusive society requires government institutions, communities and citizens to work together so that disability does not become a barrier to participation or opportunity. What more can be done to make welfare schemes more accessible and ensure persons with disabilities have equal opportunities to live with dignity and independence?
