Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay felicitated Head Constable M. Velmurugan of Kovilpalayam police station on September 29 after the officer clung to the roof rails of a fleeing SUV for more than 40 km during a police chase involving suspected gutkha smugglers in Coimbatore. The incident took place on September 27, when police attempted to stop a Karnataka-registered SUV allegedly carrying banned tobacco products.

The vehicle sped towards Tiruppur, with Velmurugan holding onto its roof as police teams and ambulances followed. The SUV was eventually intercepted near Avinashi, three men from Rajasthan were arrested and 231 kg of gutkha was seized, according to Coimbatore Rural Police. Vijay praised Velmurugan’s “exceptional courage, presence of mind and dedication to duty”, while DGP Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal also congratulated him.

A Routine Check Turns Into A 40-Km Pursuit

The incident began early on September 27 after police received information about the alleged transportation of banned tobacco products from Karnataka to Coimbatore. A team from Kovilpalayam police station, including Sub-Inspector V. Vignesh and Head Constable Velmurugan, intercepted a Karnataka-registered SUV during a vehicle check.

According to police, the occupants allegedly pushed the officers, shut the vehicle doors and attempted to drive away. Velmurugan then climbed onto the roof and held on to the roof rails as the SUV accelerated away. The vehicle travelled through parts of Coimbatore towards Avinashi, with police teams alerted along the route. The pursuit continued for more than 40 km, while an ambulance crew also followed the vehicle to assist if the officer needed emergency medical attention.

Police Coordination Helped Bring The SUV To A Halt

The chase eventually moved into Tiruppur district, where police teams coordinated to intercept the vehicle. According to reports, police and ambulance teams surrounded the SUV near Avinashi and brought it to a halt. The three occupants initially attempted to flee, but all three were subsequently arrested. They were identified as P. Babu Dhara, 27, A. Rajesh, 23, and S. Suresh, 20, all residents of Rajasthan.

Police said the suspects had allegedly transported the tobacco products from Bengaluru for delivery to associates in Coimbatore. Coimbatore Rural Police later said 231 kg of gutkha was seized from the vehicle. Earlier reports had put the quantity at around 300 kg, but the subsequent police account gave the seized quantity as 231 kg.

The role of people outside the immediate police team was also significant. An NHAI ambulance crew recorded footage of the pursuit and ambulance personnel assisted the police operation. Reports said neighbouring police teams were alerted as the vehicle continued towards Avinashi, allowing the authorities to coordinate the interception rather than relying only on the officers initially involved. The case remains under investigation, including the alleged route of the tobacco consignment and its intended recipients.

The Chief Minister Recognises The Officer’s Courage

Following the incident, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay personally invited Velmurugan to the Secretariat in Chennai on September 29 and felicitated him in the presence of DGP and Head of Police Force Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal. The Coimbatore Rural Police said Velmurugan acted at considerable personal risk while carrying out his duty and described his actions as reflecting his commitment to preventing the illegal transportation of banned tobacco products and maintaining law and order. Aggarwal also personally congratulated the head constable for his courage and commitment.

The incident has drawn public attention because of the unusual circumstances of the pursuit, but it also highlights the risks that frontline police personnel can face during attempts to stop suspected offenders. Velmurugan’s decision to remain on the moving vehicle was extremely dangerous, even as his actions contributed to preventing the suspects from escaping. For policing to remain effective and safe, individual courage needs to be supported by coordinated teams, appropriate equipment, communication systems and procedures designed to minimise unnecessary risks.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Public servants who act under difficult circumstances deserve recognition, but their safety must remain equally important. The incident shows how coordination between police teams, emergency services and local personnel can help resolve a dangerous situation. It also offers a wider reminder that preventing illegal trade should not require frontline officers to put their lives at avoidable risk. Recognition for courage should therefore go hand in hand with stronger safety protocols and institutional support for those working on the ground. How can authorities better recognise such commitment while ensuring that police personnel do not have to take life-threatening risks to carry out their duties?
