Captain Smit Machchhar, a Mumbai-born Indian pilot, has come into the international spotlight after reportedly helping avert a potentially catastrophic incident aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073 on September 30. Machchhar, who has more than 13 years of commercial flying experience and over 6,400 hours on Boeing 737 aircraft, joined flydubai in June 2022 after spending more than 11 years with SpiceJet.
During the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight, he was reportedly seriously injured after his co-pilot allegedly attacked him in the cockpit. According to Israeli officials cited by Reuters, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door despite his injuries, allowing passengers and crew to intervene. The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called him a “true hero”, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his courage and said his actions helped save hundreds of lives. The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia said Machchhar was stable and receiving medical treatment.

Mumbai Roots
Machchhar is a native of Mumbai and has built a career around the Boeing 737 fleet. According to his professional profile cited by multiple reports, he has accumulated more than 9,500 flying hours, with Reuters reporting the figure at around 9,750 hours, over a career spanning roughly 15 years.
Before joining flydubai, he spent more than 11 years with SpiceJet, beginning in June 2011. During his time there, he progressed to commander and later served as a Line Training Captain, a role involving the training and checking of pilots. His long operational experience is particularly relevant because a captain’s role extends beyond flying an aircraft to maintaining safety and managing complex situations in the cockpit.

From Textiles To Aviation
Aviation was reportedly not Machchhar’s original career plan. Reuters reported that he had initially considered joining his family’s textile business, but developed an interest in flying when he was 19. His mother was reportedly concerned about the risks involved, but Machchhar eventually pursued aviation training in New Zealand.
His professional profile also lists a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the Welingkar Institute of Management. After more than a decade at SpiceJet, he joined Dubai-based flydubai as a captain in June 2022. His professional experience includes flying Boeing 737 aircraft, and his profile records extensive experience as a pilot-in-command.
The career path from an initial interest in the family business to thousands of hours in commercial aviation now forms an important part of the story of the pilot being praised internationally.
Praise From Leaders
Machchhar’s name became widely known after the reported cockpit confrontation aboard FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Flydubai confirmed that an altercation occurred in the flight deck and said the aircraft was secured by on-duty crew before being diverted safely to Tabuk.
The airline has stressed that the underlying reasons and motives remain unknown and that a formal investigation is under way. Separately, Israeli officials said the co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar and that the aircraft subsequently experienced a rapid descent. According to reports, despite being seriously injured, Machchhar managed to activate the cockpit-door release, enabling passengers and crew to overpower the other pilot. Two flydubai pilots who were travelling as passengers then reportedly helped land the aircraft in Tabuk.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Machchhar had “saved the lives of 174 people”, including Israeli citizens and other nationals, and called him a “true hero”. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the Indian pilot, calling him a “HERO” and saying that, despite being seriously injured, he showed “immense courage” and “unwavering resolve” to protect others.

The Embassy of India in Saudi Arabia said Machchhar was stable and receiving necessary medical attention, while Indian authorities remained in contact with his family and Saudi authorities. Dubai-based airline flydubai said the underlying reasons for the incident remained unknown and urged against premature speculation.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Captain Smit Machchhar’s journey is significant not only because of the extraordinary circumstances in which he has received international attention, but also because it reflects years of training, experience and responsibility built away from the public eye. At the same time, the details of the cockpit incident should continue to be treated carefully until the official investigation establishes exactly what happened and why.
Flydubai and the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority have both urged people not to engage in premature speculation. What lessons can the aviation industry draw from this incident to further strengthen cockpit safety, emergency preparedness and the culture of cooperation that can protect lives in moments of crisis?
