Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spokesperson and current Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) co-convener Ashutosh Ranka donated ₹21,100 to AAP during the 2025–26 financial year, before taking up his role in the CJP, according to the party’s contribution report submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI). The report, which was made public on September 28, 2026, shows that AAP received ₹12.10 crore in contributions during the financial year, a 68% decline from the ₹38.10 crore reported in 2024–25.

The donor list also includes AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, who contributed ₹30,000, and former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, who donated ₹42,000. The disclosures have drawn attention to the party’s financial contributions and the individuals and organisations that supported it during the year. The figures reflect donations made during the financial year and do not establish any financial association between Ranka’s earlier contribution and his subsequent political role in the CJP.

Ranka’s Contribution And Donors

According to AAP’s contribution report, Ranka donated ₹21,100 to the party during the 2025–26 financial year, before becoming a co-convener of the CJP. He had previously served as an AAP spokesperson. The report lists 1,202 numbered entries and provides details of contributions received by the party. Among the individual donors, Kejriwal made three contributions of ₹10,000 each, taking his total to ₹30,000. Atishi made 12 payments of ₹3,500 each, amounting to ₹42,000. Punjab AAP president Aman Arora contributed ₹1.20 lakh through 12 payments of ₹10,000 each.

The party’s largest disclosed contributions came from Prudent Electoral Trust and Trident Limited, which donated ₹5 crore each. Together, the two contributions accounted for nearly 83% of AAP’s total disclosed donations. Trident was founded by former AAP Rajya Sabha MP Rajinder Gupta, who was elected to the Upper House on an AAP ticket in October 2025.

The company’s ₹5-crore cheque was dated January 9, 2026, when Gupta was associated with the party. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in April 2026. The report records contributions received during the financial year, rather than the political affiliations of donors at the time of publication.

AAP’s Funding In Context

The latest disclosure comes after AAP lost power in Delhi in February 2025, while continuing to govern Punjab. The party’s contributions fell from ₹38.10 crore in 2024–25 to ₹12.10 crore in 2025–26, a decrease of approximately 68%. In 2023–24, AAP had reported ₹11.06 crore in contributions. Prudent Electoral Trust had contributed ₹16.40 crore to the party in 2024–25, making it the largest donor that year.

The latest figures also form part of a broader picture of political party funding in India. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) reported ₹58.25 crore in contributions for 2025–26, while the YSR Congress Party reported ₹24.31 crore. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) reported no contributions exceeding ₹20,000 during the same period. Under the rules governing political party contributions, parties must disclose the details of donors whose contributions exceed ₹20,000 in a financial year.

These contribution reports do not represent a party’s entire annual income, which is disclosed separately in its audited accounts. The ECI’s published records provide information about the sources and amounts of declared contributions, but do not, by themselves, explain the reasons behind changes in donations or the motivations of individual contributors.

Political Parties’ Funding

Contribution reports for the 2025–26 financial year show the declared donations received by several political parties across India. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) reported ₹58.25 crore in contributions, while the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) disclosed ₹24.30 crore and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) reported ₹12.09 crore. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) reported no contributions exceeding ₹20,000 during the year.

AAP’s disclosed contributions included ₹5 crore each from Prudent Electoral Trust and Trident Limited. These figures reflect declared contributions and do not represent the parties’ total income or overall financial resources. The contribution reports of the BJP, Congress and some other national parties were yet to be made public in the reports reviewed

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Political funding plays an important role in the functioning of democratic institutions, and transparent disclosures help citizens understand how political parties receive financial support. The latest AAP contribution report highlights the importance of clear records, accessible information and public scrutiny of donations, particularly when individuals change political affiliations.

At the same time, a donation made during an earlier political association should be understood in its proper timeline and context, without drawing conclusions about a person’s present affiliations or intentions. Political parties, regardless of their ideology or position, should ensure that their financial disclosures are accurate, accessible and easy for the public to understand.

Citizens also deserve opportunities to engage with political funding issues through informed and respectful discussion, rather than speculation or personal attacks. Greater transparency can help strengthen public trust and encourage accountability across the political spectrum. How can political parties make their funding disclosures more accessible and understandable to the public while ensuring greater accountability?
