India made a last-minute change to its male flag-bearer for the Asian Games opening ceremony in Nagoya, Japan, on September 19, with kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat replacing two-time Asian Games shot put champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) cited a “technical issue” for the change.
According to reports, Toor’s ceremonial kit was still in India and was expected to reach Nagoya airport around 3 pm, leaving limited time for him to collect it and reach the ceremony. Shooter Manu Bhaker remains the female flag-bearer. Toor continues as part of India’s athletics contingent.
Kit Issue
According to reports, Toor was informed about his flag-bearer role on Friday and said his ceremonial kit was expected to arrive at Nagoya airport around 3 pm. He said collecting it and reaching the opening ceremony venue in time would be difficult. ‘My ceremonial kit is lying in India. Nobody in athletics team has ceremonial kits with them,’ Toor said. The IOA subsequently confirmed Sehrawat as his replacement for the ceremony.
Athletics Schedule
According to reports, the Indian athletics contingent has been training at the University of Tsukuba near Tokyo since September 13 as part of an acclimatisation camp and is scheduled to travel to Nagoya on September 21.
The athletes were reportedly not originally expected to attend the opening ceremony, which meant their ceremonial kits were not with them. Their competition kits had reportedly been received by the athletics contingent. Toor is aiming for a third consecutive Asian Games gold in shot put.
