India’s space programme is often associated with celebrated names such as Dr Vikram Sarabhai and Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. But behind the country’s journey into space were several scientists whose contributions helped establish its early foundations. One of them was Prof. Eknath Vasant Chitnis, a scientist who worked closely with Sarabhai and played an important role in the development of India’s early space programme.
Born in Kolhapur on July 25, 1925, Chitnis lost both his parents at a young age and was raised by his grandmother. He went on to study physics and later joined the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad, where he worked with Sarabhai on space physics and cosmic-ray research. His career would eventually span scientific research, institution-building, satellite applications and science education.
From Cosmic-Ray Research To India’s Space Programme
Chitnis began his scientific career working in the field of cosmic rays. During his research, he developed Cerenkov counters and associated electronics for scientific experiments. His work included an Extensive Air Shower Experiment conducted in Kodaikanal between 1956 and 1958.

His research also took him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked with the group of physicist Bruno Rossi. After spending several years in the United States, Chitnis returned to India when Sarabhai called him back to contribute to the country’s emerging space programme.
In 1962, Chitnis became Member-Secretary of the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), the organisation established under Sarabhai that preceded the formation of ISRO. The position placed him among the scientists involved in building the institutional foundations of India’s space efforts.
How Thumba Became India’s First Rocket Launch Site
One of Chitnis’s important responsibilities was helping identify a suitable location for India’s first rocket-launching station. An expert team surveyed potential sites before selecting Thumba, near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.
Thumba’s location near the Earth’s magnetic equator made it particularly suitable for atmospheric and space research. The site subsequently became the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS).
On November 21, 1963, India’s first sounding rocket, the Nike-Apache, was launched from Thumba. The launch marked an important early milestone in India’s space journey and demonstrated the country’s growing capabilities in space research.
The early facility was modest, with scientists working from buildings associated with a local church and using limited infrastructure. From these beginnings, the site developed into an important centre for India’s space programme.
Taking Satellite Technology To Rural India
Chitnis’s work was not restricted to rocket launches and scientific research. He also contributed to the development of applications that demonstrated how space technology could address practical needs on the ground.
One of his notable assignments was directing the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) in 1975-76. The programme used NASA’s ATS-6 satellite to transmit educational television programmes to approximately 2,400 villages across six Indian states.

SITE demonstrated the potential of satellite communication to reach communities that conventional communication infrastructure could not easily serve. The experiment became an important milestone in India’s satellite applications programme, particularly in the use of space technology for education and rural development.
Building India’s Space Applications Capabilities
Chitnis later became Director of the Space Applications Centre (SAC) in Ahmedabad. His career was closely associated with India’s efforts to apply space technology to communication, broadcasting and developmental needs.
His work contributed to the broader development of satellite applications in India, including areas such as remote sensing and communication. Rather than viewing space technology solely as a means of scientific exploration, these programmes demonstrated how satellites could be used for services directly affecting people’s lives.
It is therefore more precise to describe Chitnis as a key contributor to India’s satellite applications and communication efforts rather than attributing the entire development of the INSAT programme to him personally.
The Scientist Who Recognised A Young A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
Another notable chapter in Chitnis’s career involved a young A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
According to accounts of the episode, when INCOSPAR was selecting scientists for a NASA training programme, Sarabhai asked Chitnis to examine Kalam’s qualifications. Chitnis reportedly recognised Kalam’s potential, contributing to his selection for the training programme.
The experience became an early chapter in Kalam’s scientific career. He would later become one of India’s most prominent aerospace scientists before serving as the country’s President.

Padma Bhushan And A Life Beyond ISRO
Chitnis’s contributions to science were recognised when he received the Padma Bhushan in 1985. The official Padma Awards notification listed him as Director of the Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad.
After retiring from ISRO, Chitnis continued to contribute to education and science communication. He was associated with Savitribai Phule Pune University and lectured there for more than two decades. He also helped establish the university’s Educational Multimedia Research Centre.
His involvement with public communication extended beyond academia. Chitnis served on the Board of Directors of the Press Trust of India and was its chairman twice.
A Century Of Contributions
Chitnis turned 100 in July 2025. A centenary conference organised at IISER Pune highlighted his contributions to India’s space programme, science communication and institution-building.
The Government of India described him as one of the principal architects of India’s space programme, recognising his role during the formative years of the country’s space efforts.
Chitnis died in Pune in October 2025 at the age of 100, bringing to an end a century-long life that had witnessed and contributed to India’s transformation from a young nation conducting its earliest rocket experiments to a country with an established space programme.

Prof. Eknath Vasant Chitnis’s story offers a glimpse into the many scientists who helped build India’s space programme during its formative years. His work with Vikram Sarabhai, his involvement in selecting Thumba, and his contributions to satellite applications and science education were part of a wider institutional effort that laid the groundwork for India’s achievements in space.
His career also illustrates how India’s early space programme extended beyond launching rockets. Through initiatives such as SITE, scientists explored how satellite technology could support education, communication and development.
While names such as Sarabhai and Kalam remain widely recognised, Chitnis’s century-long journey reflects the contribution of another generation of scientists who helped build the institutions and capabilities on which India’s space ambitions grew.
