India has stepped up its humanitarian response to Nepal’s devastating floods, with the eighth Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft carrying 35 tonnes of relief and rescue supplies departing for Kathmandu on September 9. The consignment includes National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) equipment, specialised rescue gear, forensic supplies and replenishment material for Indian Army personnel deployed in Nepal.
The latest shipment takes India’s total assistance to more than 130 tonnes since the disaster struck on August 26, alongside 54 Indian experts supporting rescue, relief and forensic operations. Nepal is continuing a large-scale search for missing people, while international teams work alongside Nepali authorities.
Equipment To Support Rescue Efforts
The latest IAF C-17 aircraft carried equipment intended for some of the most challenging aspects of the ongoing response. India has supplied tunnel and mud-rescue equipment, including mud-rescue suits, gas detectors, breathing apparatus and inflatable walkways, as well as portable generators, lighting towers and dewatering pumps. Forensic assistance includes DNA kits, reagents and equipment to help identify victims.
India’s specialised tunnel rescue team has been working with the Nepal Army, initially at Chilime and Langtang, with operations now focused on Chilime, where difficult terrain and limited access have slowed rescue efforts. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the Indian team has continued making progress through manual efforts and innovative techniques. A makeshift access track is also being constructed so that heavy machinery, including an excavator, can reach the tunnel.
Nepal’s Search Continues
The humanitarian operation follows catastrophic flash floods that struck Nepal on August 26 after a glacier collapse in the Himalayan region triggered devastating flows of mud and water through the Trishuli Valley. Thousands of people remain missing, while rescue teams have been working across badly damaged communities and hydropower sites.
Recent reports put the death toll at more than 1,300, with thousands still unaccounted for. The disaster has also left roads and bridges damaged, making conventional transport difficult in several areas. Nepal has therefore been using helicopters and, increasingly, drones to deliver essential supplies to isolated communities.
India’s assistance has included not only relief materials but also specialist personnel. The MEA previously said 54 Indian experts had been deployed, including tunnel-rescue specialists, forensic experts and medical personnel. Indian forensic teams are working with Nepali authorities in laboratories in Kathmandu to examine DNA samples, while rescue personnel remain involved on the ground.
India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, said the eighth Indian flight carrying relief and rescue items reached Kathmandu and that the material was handed over to Nepal’s Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Mahabir Pun. The MEA has reiterated that India will continue supporting Nepal’s rescue, relief and recovery efforts.

India’s continued assistance to Nepal demonstrates how neighbouring countries can respond to a humanitarian crisis by pooling expertise, equipment and resources. The deployment of specialised rescue teams, forensic personnel and essential supplies shows that effective disaster response requires more than immediate relief; it also depends on technical knowledge, coordination and sustained support during recovery. Such cooperation can help countries overcome difficult terrain, damaged infrastructure and limited local capacity when a crisis overwhelms existing systems.
At the same time, the scale of the disaster underlines the urgent need for stronger disaster preparedness, resilient infrastructure and faster regional cooperation in a climate-vulnerable Himalayan region. Communities living near rivers, glaciers, hydropower projects and unstable mountain slopes face growing risks from flash floods, landslides, glacial lake outbursts and other climate-related hazards.
Governments must therefore invest in early-warning systems, hazard mapping, emergency communication networks, evacuation routes and regular community-level preparedness drills. Rescue equipment and trained personnel are essential, but preventing loss of life also depends on ensuring that warnings reach people in time and that vulnerable communities know how to respond.
India’s assistance to Nepal reflects the value of solidarity during a crisis, but it should also encourage a broader conversation about shared responsibility in the Himalayas. Humanitarian support can save lives in the aftermath of a disaster, while long-term planning, scientific cooperation and community participation can help prevent such tragedies from becoming even more devastating.
