Telangana chess player Rajkumar D has won the 6th Nagpur All-India FIDE-Rated Below-1700 Chess Tournament 2026, finishing the nine-round competition unbeaten with 8.5 points.
The tournament, held in Nagpur, brought together 547 participants, with Rajkumar securing the top position and a ₹50,000 cash prize. His victory is particularly notable given his journey through Telangana’s social-welfare education system: he studied from Classes 5 to 10 at the Social Welfare Residential School in Sirpur and later completed his Intermediate education at Social Welfare College, Ichoda.
He also trained at the Shaikpet Chess Academy under coach Shivakumar. Tournament records list Rajkumar D, FIDE ID 33325600, as a Telangana player with a rating of 1606 and an U19 classification. The achievement has drawn congratulations from Telangana Social Welfare Residential Degree & Junior Colleges PDs and PETs Association chairman Dr Rama Laxman and other association leaders.
An Unbeaten Run
Rajkumar’s victory was built on consistency across all nine rounds rather than a single decisive result. He accumulated 8.5 points out of a possible nine, meaning he did not suffer a defeat during the tournament. His performance placed him at the top of a field of 547 players in the Below-1700 category. The official Chess-Results database identifies him as a Telangana player and records his FIDE rating at 1606 at the time of the event.
The tournament was specifically designed for players in the lower rating bracket, making it an important competitive platform for developing and established players below the 1700 mark. Rajkumar’s result therefore stands out not simply because he won, but because he maintained a high level of performance throughout a multi-round national-level competition.
His achievement also comes with a financial reward. Rajkumar received ₹50,000 for finishing first. The result adds to his record of competitive participation in chess. Earlier tournament records show him competing in events across Telangana and other parts of India, including the Telangana State Under-17 Boys Chess Championship and national and international-rated competitions.
From Sirpur To Nagpur
Rajkumar’s background adds another dimension to the victory. He studied at the Social Welfare Residential School in Sirpur from Class 5 through Class 10, before pursuing Intermediate education at Social Welfare College in Ichoda. Alongside his formal education, he developed his chess skills at the Chess Academy in Shaikpet, where he trained under coach Shivakumar.
His connection with Telangana’s social-welfare education system goes back several years. Chess-Results records from the 2023 Telangana Gurukulams All India Below-1600 FIDE Rating Tournament list Rajkumar with a rating of 1191 and identify his club as TSWREIS. His current tournament rating of 1606 represents a substantial rise from that earlier recorded rating, reflecting his progression within competitive chess.
The latest victory has been welcomed by representatives of the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Degree & Junior Colleges PDs and PETs Association. Dr Rama Laxman, the association’s chairman, congratulated Rajkumar, along with his coach Shivakumar and principal Balaswamy. Association leaders Narsaiah, Neeraja, Chander and Harikishan also praised the achievement and described it as a proud moment for Telangana and TSWREIS.
Rajkumar’s journey is significant because it demonstrates how sporting development can run alongside formal education. His story does not require an exaggerated hardship narrative: the documented facts themselves show a young player progressing through a residential-school system, receiving specialised coaching and eventually winning an All-India FIDE-rated tournament.
