Five people were killed and five others injured after Amazon Prime Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft operated by 21 Air, overran a runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday, September 6. The aircraft had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and crossed beyond the runway before striking multiple vehicles and catching fire.
Three of the injured were critically hurt, while the pilot and co-pilot were among those trapped following the crash, according to Miami-Dade Fire Chief Ray Jadallah. More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units and around 200 emergency personnel responded as crews battled the fire and a fuel leak.
The crash forced the closure of all runways and taxiways and triggered a ground stop, causing widespread flight disruptions. Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company was working with authorities to understand what happened, while the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) began investigations. The cause of the crash remains unknown.
Crash Triggers Massive Rescue Operation
The aircraft overran Miami International Airport’s diagonal runway shortly before 2 p.m. local time and continued beyond the airport boundary, where it struck several vehicles on the ground before coming to rest and catching fire. Images from the scene showed the Boeing 767 with its nose down and tail raised, while thick smoke rose above the airport.
Emergency crews faced a difficult rescue operation involving the burning aircraft, damaged vehicles and a fuel leak. Fire Chief Ray Jadallah said the pilot and co-pilot were trapped inside the aircraft, while at least two people were trapped in vehicles hit by the plane.
Five people died and five were injured, including three in critical condition. The identities of those killed and injured had not been publicly released in the latest updates.
Amazon said its “absolute priority” was the “safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved” and that it was working closely with local authorities to establish what happened. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also warned travellers to expect “significant delays and potential cancellations” following the crash.
Investigators Examine Landing Sequence
While the exact cause remains under investigation, preliminary flight-tracking information and weather conditions are likely to form part of the inquiry. Reuters reported that Flightradar24 data showed the aircraft landing at around 1:53 p.m. and travelling at approximately 112 knots, or 129 mph (207 km/h), when it left the usable runway area.
Thunderstorms were present around Miami, with wind gusts reportedly reaching about 30 mph. Aviation experts cited by AP said investigators will examine where the aircraft touched down, how much runway remained, its braking performance and the crew’s decisions during the landing.
Experts have also raised questions about whether weather or a possible tailwind may have affected the approach. However, none of these factors has been established as the cause of the crash. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft’s systems, maintenance history, flight data, cockpit communications, air-traffic-control records and runway conditions before drawing conclusions.
The aircraft was a roughly 32-year-old Boeing 767 that had previously operated as a passenger aircraft before being converted for cargo use; its age alone does not establish any link to the accident.
