An Air India Express Boeing 737 operating flight IX 415 from Kochi to Abu Dhabi was forced to turn back on September 7 after its crew detected a rapidly falling oil quantity in Engine 1 while cruising at around 36,000 feet, approximately 50 minutes after take-off.
According to sources cited in multiple reports, pilots carried out a FORDEC assessment and decided to abandon the Abu Dhabi sector as the oil quantity continued to fall. During the return to Kochi, Engine 1’s oil pressure reportedly fluctuated before entering the red or danger zone, following which the crew shut down the engine using the applicable non-normal procedure.
The aircraft subsequently landed safely at Cochin International Airport. Reports said the commander informed air traffic control about the return, while both pilots continued monitoring the aircraft and preparing for possible contingencies.
No injuries have been reported. While some reports described the landing as an overweight single-engine landing, that detail has not been independently confirmed by an official source. At the time of publication, no detailed public statement explaining the technical cause had been issued by Air India Express or the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The immediate focus is therefore likely to be on inspecting Engine 1 and determining why its oil quantity was falling. Flight-tracking and schedule sources confirm IX 415 as the regular Kochi-Abu Dhabi service operated by Air India Express, with the sector normally taking around four hours.
Crew Acted On Warning Signs
The incident became serious because the pilots did not simply treat the falling oil indication as a temporary anomaly. Sources said the aircraft was around 50 minutes into the flight and cruising at 36,000 feet when the pilot and co-pilot noticed that Engine 1’s oil quantity was dropping rapidly.
The crew then used a FORDEC assessment a structured aviation decision-making approach covering facts, options, risks and benefits, decision, execution and checking the outcome before deciding that continuing to Abu Dhabi was not the safest option. Instead, the aircraft was turned around towards Kochi. During the return, the crew continued to monitor the engine.

The crew then followed the Non-Normal Checklist and shut down Engine 1. The aircraft ultimately completed the return safely. For passengers, the seriousness of the situation may not have been immediately apparent; one report said passengers were unaware of the extent of the technical problem while the crew managed it in the cockpit.
Importantly, there is currently no official indication that the engine experienced a fire, nor is there a confirmed finding that an oil leak, pump failure or internal engine damage caused the falling oil level. Oil quantity and oil pressure are connected but distinct parameters, meaning the cockpit indication alone cannot establish the underlying mechanical fault. That will require a technical inspection.
What Happens After Landing?
The safe landing brings the immediate flight emergency to an end, but the technical investigation into what happened is only beginning. Once an aircraft experiences a significant engine-related abnormality, engineers would typically examine the affected engine and associated oil system before the aircraft can be cleared for normal operations.
The key questions will include whether there was an actual loss of oil, where that oil went, whether the oil-pressure indication was accurate, and whether any component of the lubrication system malfunctioned.
Reports have mentioned that the aircraft landed overweight after Engine 1 was shut down, describing the return as a demanding single-engine landing; however, this should be treated as a source-reported detail until confirmed by the airline or aviation regulator.
The incident also comes amid wider attention on technical events involving Indian airlines, but it would be premature to link this occurrence to a broader fleet-wide safety problem without evidence. Similarly, the aircraft registration should not be inferred simply from flight-tracking records because IX 415 has operated with different Boeing 737 aircraft on different days.
