Iran on September 6 claimed that its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy struck an unmanned US military vessel attempting to enter the Strait of Hormuz, but the US military rejected the allegation as a “total lie”.
The claim came a day after US forces said they struck three Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for Iranian ballistic-missile attacks on two US Navy warships. While Tehran says it is asserting control over the strategic waterway, Washington says its forces are defending themselves and maintaining maritime access.
The competing claims have emerged as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz falls sharply, raising concerns about further military escalation, disruption to global energy supplies and the safety of commercial vessels.
Conflicting Claims At Sea
Iran’s state media reported that the IRGC Navy attacked an unmanned US military surface vessel that was allegedly trying to enter a “protected area” of the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran said it was monitoring movements in the waterway and would respond to what it considers hostile activity.
The US, however, strongly denied that any such attack took place. US Central Command spokesperson Capt Tim Hawkins described the Iranian account as a “total lie”, leaving the alleged strike unverified.
The latest confrontation comes amid a wider maritime escalation in which both countries are making competing claims about attacks and military operations. There is currently no independent evidence publicly establishing that an American vessel was damaged in the alleged incident.
Tankers Targeted After Missile Attack
The disputed claim followed a major US operation on September 5. US Central Command said American forces struck three Iranian crude-oil carriers after the IRGC launched ballistic missiles towards two US Navy warships. CENTCOM said an aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer successfully evaded the attacks and that no American personnel were harmed.
The US military said it “permanently disabled” the M/T Downy off Iran’s Kharg Island and the M/T Stark 1 near Jask, while the unladen M/T Kylo, also known as the Noxen, was destroyed in the Gulf of Oman after its crew was ordered to abandon ship. CENTCOM commander Adm Brad Cooper said the operation was intended to impose an economic cost on Iran, warning that Washington would continue defending its forces if necessary.
Hormuz Becomes A Flashpoint
The confrontation is taking place around one of the world’s most important energy routes, making the latest developments significant far beyond the US and Iran. Reuters reported that the average daily number of commodity ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz over the past 10 days fell to about 10, its lowest level since May.
Traffic reportedly dropped from more than 15 ships on Friday to just two on Saturday, with maritime security concerns growing after repeated attacks and threats. Iran has also announced plans for a new “exclusion zone” near the Strait, with Mohsen Rezaei, head of the country’s Supreme National Security Council, saying vessels entering the area could face sanctions.
Tehran has simultaneously warned that any further US attacks would receive a stronger response, while Washington continues to enforce its blockade on Iranian oil exports.
