Self-styled influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj was detained by Delhi Police in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, following an escape bid, after massive protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) erupted outside Delhi’s Parliament Street police station.
Demonstrators, joined by MP Chandra Shekhar Aazad, demanded immediate legal action over the alleged assault on Sanjay Kumar, the father of Dalit student activist Nishu Aazad, during a protest at Jantar Mantar. The row intensified after a viral podcast showed Bhardwaj brazenly boasting about “cracking the skull” of Kumar.
Meanwhile, Nishu has sought immediate police protection following severe online abuse and rape threats from his supporters. Delhi Police confirmed Bhardwaj’s detention and stated that a chargesheet will be filed, while dismissing claims of political interference.
A Brazen Confession
The controversy reignited after a video clip surfaced where Swatantra Bhardwaj claimed he gave Kumar “60 stitches” and boasted of high-level political patronage that kept him out of jail.
Facing heavy public criticism, Swatantra Bhardwaj later claimed his remarks were merely “sarcastic” and insisted he struck out in self-defence after being surrounded by a mob. Protesting outside the police station, a visibly shaken Nishu Aazad recounted the harrowing trauma her family has endured: “For days, his supporters have been abusing me and sending rape threats. I have filed an FIR against them as well. This incident affected me deeply; I stopped going to school for weeks and felt judged by everyone”.
Addressing the demonstrators’ calls to invoke attempt-to-murder charges (Section 307), the Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) stated that Kumar’s injuries were “simple in nature” and caused by a kada (iron bangle) rather than a lethal weapon, terming rumors of a fractured skull baseless.
The Road to Detention
The incident traces back to an earlier clash at Jantar Mantar during a CJP demonstration where Kumar was injured. While police had questioned Swatantra Bhardwaj and another individual under legal notices at the time, activists and opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, alleged systemic police inaction and selective shielding of the accused.
CJP representatives and student organisations reiterated that the attack had casteist undertones, demanding the strict enforcement of the SC/ST Act alongside stringent assault charges. Delhi Police maintained that they acted strictly within the framework of the law and traced Bhardwaj across state lines to Bulandshahr, where he was apprehended despite attempting to flee.

In a constitutional democracy, justice should neither be delayed by political proximity nor dictated by social status. Violence has no place in peaceful democratic expression, and the brazen glorification of physical assault on public platforms strikes at the very heart of civil society.
More alarming is the targeted weaponisation of digital harassment and threats against a young female student seeking accountability for her family. Compassion, social harmony, and mutual respect can only flourish when law enforcement demonstrates unwavering impartiality and every citizen, particularly from vulnerable communities, feels secure enough to exercise their fundamental rights. How can we, as a society, ensure that peaceful dissent is safeguarded from violence and digital intimidation?
