Union Minister for Food Processing Industries and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan has received an anonymous death threat warning that he would be “killed shortly by hardcore terrorists”.
The communication, received by the ministry on September 1, contained two mobile numbers and was described by Paswan’s office as a direct threat to his life. His Additional Private Secretary Alok Kumar Singh wrote to Home Secretary Govind Mohan, seeking an urgent investigation into the letter’s origin and authenticity and a review of the minister’s security arrangements.
The matter has also been brought to the attention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the CRPF and the Bihar government. Paswan is already under nationwide Z-category security cover. While the threat has triggered a security review, authorities have not publicly identified the sender or established any link to a terrorist organisation.
Anonymous Letter Raises Alarm
The threatening communication was unsigned and reportedly reached the ministry with two mobile numbers. According to the letter sent by Paswan’s office to the Home Secretary, officials found a direct threat to the Union minister’s life after opening it.
The communication allegedly stated: “You will be killed shortly by hardcore terrorists.” Paswan’s office called the wording, particularly its reference to “hardcore terrorists”, a “matter of grave concern” that raised “serious apprehensions” over his safety.
The original communication was enclosed for examination, with his office asking the Home Ministry to investigate its origin, authenticity and circumstances. It also sought suitable augmentation of Paswan’s security if required, particularly in view of his public engagements.
Reports consistently identify Paswan as a Z-category protectee, although some initial reports used “Z-Plus”; the Indian Express and Hindustan Times specifically describe his current cover as nationwide Z-category security provided by the Home Ministry.
The incident has prompted involvement from multiple agencies. Paswan’s office has informed Amit Shah, the CRPF and the Bihar government, while seeking an urgent probe. At present, there is no publicly available confirmation that the threat originated from any identified terrorist group, nor has an accused person been named in connection with the latest communication.
This distinction is important: the phrase “hardcore terrorists” appears in the alleged threat, but does not by itself establish that a terrorist organisation is behind it. The investigation will have to determine who sent the communication, whether the numbers mentioned in it are connected to the sender and whether the threat represents a credible security risk.
A Previous Threat In 2025
The latest incident comes after Paswan faced another death threat through social media in July 2025, shortly after announcing his intention to contest the Bihar Assembly elections. LJP (Ram Vilas) spokesperson Rajesh Bhatt filed a complaint at the Patna Cyber Police Station, alleging that an Instagram account using the name “Tiger Meraj Idisi” had issued the threat.
Bhatt described the alleged act as reflecting “criminal intent and involvement in unlawful activities” and requested immediate action against the suspect. Patna Cyber DCP Nitish Chandra Dharia confirmed that the police had registered a case.
“On the night of July 11, at around 9 pm, Union Minister Chirag Paswan received a death threat via social media. A case has been registered in the Patna Cyber Police Station, and legal action is underway,” Dharia said at the time.
That earlier case subsequently resulted in an arrest, according to Times of India. Police arrested a 21-year-old man from Samastipur, identified as Mohd Miraj Idrisi, who was allegedly using the online alias “Tiger Meraj Idrisi”.
Investigators reportedly traced the account through technical analysis, recovered the mobile phone and SIM allegedly used in the incident, and handed him over to Patna cyber police for further investigation.
The 2025 episode and the latest letter are therefore materially different: the former involved a social-media account and led to an arrest, while the present case concerns an anonymous written communication and has so far produced no publicly identified suspect.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Threats against elected representatives and public officials have no place in a democratic society, regardless of political affiliation or ideology. A death threat should be investigated swiftly and impartially, while authorities must avoid both complacency and unnecessary speculation.
The latest communication deserves a thorough examination so that its authenticity, source and credibility can be established, while Paswan’s safety is appropriately protected. At the same time, responsible reporting is essential: invoking “terrorists” in an anonymous letter should not be treated as proof of terrorist involvement until investigators establish the facts.
